Wang Daohan
Wang Daohan (March 27, 1915 - December 24, 2005), male, Han nationality, formerly known as Wang daohuai, was born in Jiashan County, Anhui Province (now Mingguang City). He studied in Jiaotong University (now Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University) and Guanghua University (the predecessor of East China Normal University). He is the son of Wang Yuxiang, a member of the Communist Party of China. He once served as secretary of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee, mayor of Shanghai, President of the Cross Strait Relations Association, member of the CPC Central Advisory Committee and other important positions.
He was admitted to Guanghua University in 1937 and joined the Communist Party of China in 1938. He served as mayor of Shanghai in 1980 and was elected member of the Advisory Committee of the CPC Central Committee in 1987. On December 16, 1991, the Association for cross strait relations was established in Beijing, and Wang Daohan was elected president. From April 27 to 29, 1993, he held talks with Gu Zhenfu in Singapore, contributing to the development of cross-strait relations. He died in Shanghai on December 24, 2005 at the age of 90.
Wang Daohan has always adhered to the basic principle of "peaceful reunification and one country, two systems" and made great efforts to implement the eight propositions of developing cross strait relations and promoting the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland at the present stage. In April 1993, Wang Daohan authorized to hold talks with Gu Zhenfu, leader of Taiwan Strait Exchange Foundation, which is known as "Wang Gu talks".

Early experience
Born in Wuhu City, Anhui Province in 1915, Wang Daohan, 18, was admitted to the Mechanical Department of Jiaotong University from Nanjing middle school (now Ninghai middle school) in 1932. At the end of November, he was arrested by the Kuomintang. Three months later, he was released on bail by his father and continued to engage in revolutionary work in his hometown. In the spring of 1937, he was re admitted to the Department of mathematics and physics, School of science, Guanghua University (now East China Normal University), and continued to study in his second year.
Join the Communist Party of China
He joined the Communist Party of China in 1938. During the Anti Japanese War, he successively served as the head of the Field Service Regiment of the fourth detachment of the New Fourth Army, the county magistrate, the deputy director of the administrative office, the Commissioner, and the member of the prefectural Party committee. After 1940, he served as the county magistrate and Secretary of the county Party committee of Jiashan County, Huainan City, deputy director of Huainan administrative office, Commissioner of the East Commissioner's office of Jinpu Road, Huainan City, director of finance department and deputy director of Huainan Municipal Party committee. After 1945, he served as deputy director of finance department and deputy director of Construction Department of Jiangsu Anhui border region government, Minister and political commissar of Military Industry Department of central China military region and Shandong military region, acting director of Jiaodong district administration and director of Anhui provincial finance office. After 1949, he served as deputy director and Minister of Finance and economics of Hangzhou military Regulatory Commission, deputy director of Finance Office of Zhejiang Province, director of finance department and Commerce Department of Zhejiang Province, and director of Industry Department of East China military and political Commission.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China
After 1952, he served as vice minister of the first Ministry of machinery industry and executive deputy director of the Foreign Economic Liaison Committee. He was persecuted during the cultural revolution. After 1978, he served as vice minister of the Ministry of foreign economic relations and deputy director of the state import and Export Administration Commission and the Foreign Investment Administration Commission. after 1980, he served as secretary, vice mayor, acting mayor and mayor of Shanghai municipal Party committee. After 1985, he served as a consultant of Shanghai municipal government and director of Shanghai Economic Zone Planning Office of the State Council. On December 28 of the same year, Shanghai Taiwan Research Association was born, and he was unanimously recommended as honorary president. In 1985, Tufts University awarded him the title of honorary doctor of public administration in recognition of his achievements as mayor of Shanghai. The city of Chicago awarded him the title of honorary citizen. He was elected to the Advisory Committee of the CPC Central Committee in 1987. He was elected vice chairman of Soong Ching Ling Foundation in 1990.
Wang Gu talks
On December 16, 1991, the Association for cross strait relations was established in Beijing, and the venerable Wang Gong was elected president. From April 27 to 29, 1993, Wang held talks with Gu Zhenfu, chairman of the Taiwan Strait Exchange Foundation, in Singapore, which contributed to the development of cross strait relations. In November 1993, he was elected as the honorary president of the ninth Shanghai Federation of industry and commerce.
Shanghai inauguration
In 1994, he was appointed as honorary chairman of the board of directors of Shanghai Jiaotong University. He is a deputy to the 13th, 14th and 15th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and the 5th and 6th National People's Congress. He is also a visiting professor of Peking University, Fudan University and Tongji University. Professor of Shanghai Jiaotong University, lecturing on world economy, political economy, urban economy, economic management, etc. He was awarded the honorary doctor of law degree of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2005.
He died of illness
At 7:12 on December 24, 2005, Comrade Wang Daohan died of illness in Shanghai at the age of 90. On the 30th, he was cremated in Shanghai Longhua funeral home. Buried in the happy birthday garden.
Main achievements
President of ARATS
in December 1991, he served as the president of the Association for cross strait relations and participated in the major decisions and arrangements of the central government on Taiwan Affairs. In April 1993, Comrade Wang Daohan authorized to hold talks with Ku Zhenfu, the leader of Taiwan's Cross Strait Exchange Foundation, to realize the open contact and discussion between high-level personages on both sides of the Strait, marking the historic progress of cross strait relations and promoting the cross strait business and economic talks, which is historically known as "Wang Gu talks".
