Chen Zhen
Chen Zhen, born on October 25, 1921 in Fu'an County, Fujian Province, is a plant pathologist, agricultural educator and one of the founders of the Department of plant diseases of Hunan Agricultural University. He has been engaged in the education and scientific research of plant pathology, and has made great contributions to the research on the resistance mechanism of rice varieties to bacterial leaf blight and bacterial leaf streak, as well as the epidemic law, pathogen identification and control of rice bacterial diseases.
His father, Chen Wenhan, was a scholar of the former Qing Dynasty. He served in the governor's office of Fujian Province in the Republic of China. In 1951, Hunan Agricultural University was founded (renamed Hunan Agricultural University in 1993). Chen Zhen was employed as a teaching assistant in the Department of plant protection and began to work in plant pathology.

In more than 40 years of agricultural education and scientific research, Chen Zhen has been rated as an advanced teacher of the University for many times. In 1978 and 1983, she was awarded the title of "March 8 red flag bearer" in Hunan Province twice, and in 1983, she was awarded the title of "March 8 red flag bearer" in China. He won the advanced individual award of Hunan Provincial Science Conference in 1978, the second prize of provincial science and technology progress award twice in 1987 and 1990, and the third prize of provincial science and Technology Progress Award in 1994. In 1991, with the approval of the State Council, he was awarded the title of expert with outstanding contribution and enjoyed special government allowance.

He joined the China Democratic League in 1951 and the Communist Party of China in 1985. He has successively served as a member, standing committee member and vice chairman of Hunan Province, deputy to the sixth and Seventh National People's Congress, member, standing committee member and executive member of the second and third CPPCC of Hunan Province. He has long served as the president of Hunan plant disease society, vice president of Hunan plant protection society, vice president of South Central Branch of China plant disease society, former director of China plant disease society, director of China plant protection society, and member of Expert Advisory Committee of Hunan Science and Technology Commission. He is now honorary president of Hunan plant pathology society.
