Caowa Township

Caowa township is located in the south central part of Haiyuan County, on the east side of Nanhua, 23 kilometers away from the county seat. It is a loess hilly area with long sunshine time, large temperature difference between day and night, dry climate and barren soil. More than 60% of the cultivated land is distributed in the hilly and gully areas, with serious soil erosion. The altitude is about 1950 meters, the annual rainfall is about 300 mm, the evaporation is large, the drought is less, and the sandstorm weather is frequent.

It has jurisdiction over Tiger Village, caowa village, Tuolie village, Baiya village, Yetao village, Xiaogou village, Nanchuan village and 39 natural villages.

The total area of the township is 222.77 square kilometers, with a total population of 7468 (2017). The township has a total cultivated land area of 168000 mu, including 5200 mu of irrigated land, 20300 mu of converted farmland to forest land, and 20 wells. The township party committee has eight party branches, with a total of 266 party members, including 235 rural Party members and 28 female party members, accounting for 10.5% of the total number of Party members. There are 1 Central Primary School, 1 junior primary school, 9 completed primary schools, 4 teaching sites, 1463 students and 94 teaching staff, 1 central health center and 7 village clinics. Zhongjing highway runs through the whole Township with convenient transportation. There are 4 large buses, 8 small buses and 45 freight cars in the township. The mineral resources are mainly dolomite from luandaizi smelter, with reserves of 15 million tons and magnesium oxide grade of more than 21%. It is a high-quality raw material for smelting metal magnesium. There is a Neolithic cultural site in shuichong temple, which belongs to the majiajiao culture type 4700-5000 years ago. It is the famous Tomb of "gutaibai" (Persian, meaning Islamic missionaries) in the county. On April 8 of the lunar calendar every year, Muslim people from inside and outside the county gather to carry out sacrificial activities, becoming one of the characteristic scenic spots in Nanhua mountain tourist area.
