Wachang township is located in the south of Yangbi County, facing Ma'anshan Township and Zijin township of Weishan County across Yangbi River in the East, Jijie township of Weishan County in the south, Longtan Township in the West and Shunbi Township in the north. It has five village offices, 74 natural villages and 49 agricultural production cooperatives, including Heima, Wachang, Ruhe, Shema and waniwu.

The world-famous Yangbi Pao walnut seedling base originated in Zhacao village, Wachang township. Due to its good quality, high survival rate after transplanting and early fruiting, many customers are eager to purchase, making Wachang township a direct supply base for walnut seedlings in Chuxiong, Simao, Honghe, Lijiang, Sichuan, Hunan and Hubei. Some farmers set up walnut seedling bases in Sichuan, Hunan, Hubei and other places with the method of "borrowing chicken to lay eggs". A large number of grafting experts are employed by foreign businessmen with high salaries. The export of seedlings and technical services has become a local economic growth point. At the same time, Wachang township is also listed as the castor planting base of the comprehensive processing plant of the provincial Democratic League. The Xucun power station, with an investment of 630 million yuan in the Ninth Five Year Plan key project of Dali Prefecture, is located in Xucun village.
