Fangxiang township is located in the east of Leishan County, Guizhou Province, under the south slope of Leigong Mountain. The population of ethnic minorities accounted for 99% of the total population of the township, mainly Miao.

Fangxiang belongs to the subtropical monsoon humid climate zone, with an annual average temperature of 14.5 ℃, annual rainfall of 1350 mm, frost free period of 258 days, cool, cold and wet, less sunshine, cloudy, rainy and foggy, late warming in spring and early cooling in autumn. The frequent natural disasters, such as autumn wind and late spring cold, restrict grain production greatly. However, the land resources in the township are rich, and its unique conditions of light, temperature, humidity and soil fertility are suitable for the growth of trees, tea and traditional Chinese medicine, so it can be used as an excellent green industrial development base. The terrain in the township is high in the West and low in the East, with the highest altitude of 2178 meters, the lowest altitude of 650 meters, and the average altitude of 1470 meters.
Historical evolution
In 1944, Leishan set up a Township Administration Bureau in Fangxiang Township, one of the seven townships and two towns under its jurisdiction. After liberation in September 1950, Xiangxiang people's government was established. In December 1958, after Kaili county was built in Leishan County, it was changed into Fangxiang management area of Xijiang commune. In August 1961, the governance of Leishan county was restored, and Fangxiang management area of Xijiang commune was changed to Fangxiang commune. In July 1984, the commune was changed to Township, and Fangxiang commune was changed to Fangxiang township. In March 1992, the district was removed and the township was built. Fangxiang township was still set up in the original area (upgraded to section level township). It has jurisdiction over Pingxiang (township government resident), Tixiang, Shuizhai, douzhai, queniao, Getou and Maoping.

The total area of the township is 144.4 square kilometers (216000 mu), including 6365 mu of cultivated land (4615 mu of farmland and 1750 mu of soil), 168000 mu of woodland and 24800 mu of grassland, with the forest coverage rate of 77.3%. The township governs 7 administrative villages, 10 natural villages, 44 villager groups, 1367 households and 5699 people (including 5544 agricultural population); the per capita cultivated land area is 1.16 mu, and the per capita cultivated land area is 0.8 mu. Among the 4615 Mu paddy fields, the area of medium and low yield paddy fields is 3839 mu, accounting for 83% of the total area.

Hydrological resources
The main rivers are wumi River and Nanshao River (Maoping River). The two rivers originate from the east slope and the south slope of Leigong respectively, belonging to Qingshui River system. Wumi river flows into Taijiang River from southwest to northeast, Nanshao river flows through Rongjiang county from west to Southeast, and flows into Jianhe river. The two rivers are turbulent and have great value of hydraulic development and utilization. The installed reserves of power generation in the rivers of the township are more than 9000 kW, and 1930 kW has been developed and installed. Fangxiang water supply project was built in May 1998 and completed in July of the same year. The total investment of the project is 131400 yuan, and 3200 meters of φ 40 water main pipe and 4215 meters of water distribution pipe network are completed. Three reservoirs with a total storage capacity of 132 cubic meters have been built. 250 households and 1200 people benefited. In 2006, 45300 yuan was invested in pipe network reconstruction.

In 2012, the township party committee and government guided the farmers in queniao village and Pingxiang village to set up four professional cooperatives, including miaosen, Senbao, miaonong and suixiang. Pingxiang village, 47 kilometers away from Leishan County, was opened to traffic in 1998 and completed the reconstruction of the oil road in October 2009.
