Located in the northwest of Xiushan Tujia and Miao Autonomous County, Gaotian town is adjacent to Rongxi town in the East, Qingxichang town in the south, Waxi township of Songtao County in Guizhou Province in the West and Lixi town of Youyang County in the north, with a total area of 128.97 square kilometers.
In 1948, the territory of Gaotian town was changed from Gaotian township to Gaotian town in March 2011. By the end of 2018, the registered residence population in the town was 15173. As of June 2020, there are 3 communities and 5 administrative villages under the jurisdiction of Gaotian Town, and the town people's government is stationed in TingChang community.

History of construction
In 1948, Gaotian township was established from riqi township.
In September 1958, Gaotian township was changed into Gaotian commune.
In April 1962, Gaotian commune established maopo commune.
In December 1983, Gaotian commune and maopo commune were changed into Gaotian Township and maopo Township respectively.
In July 2001, maopo township was merged into Gaotian township.
In March 2011, Gaotian township was changed from township to town.
