The administrative area of the town is 236.31 square kilometers.
In March 1958, the commune was established. In June 1985, it was changed into a Duowen district. In December 1986, the district was removed and the town was established. By the end of 2018, the number of registered residence in 46598 people was over. As of June 2020, Duowen town has jurisdiction over 3 communities and 13 administrative villages, and the town people's government is stationed in Duowen market.
