Before March 1935, hongmaoxiajue (now Maoyang town) belonged to Ya county. On July 5, 2001, Tongshi city was renamed Wuzhishan City, and Maoyang town was subordinate to Wuzhishan City. By the end of 2018, the registered residence population in Mao town was 15318. As of June 2020, Maoyang town has jurisdiction over 13 administrative villages, and the town people's government is stationed in Maoyang village.

Historical evolution
From the Ming and Qing Dynasties to the 23rd year of the Republic of China (1934), the town was under the jurisdiction of Baisha County.
Before March 1935, hongmaoxiajue (now Maoyang town) belonged to Ya county.
In March 1935, Baisha County was founded.
In December 1956, Maozhan Township and Maoyang Township merged into Maozhan Township, and Maogui Township and Maolu Township merged into Maogui township.
In March 1958, Maozhan Township and Maogui Township were merged into Maozhan township.
In October 1958, Maozhan Township, Hongmao Township and Shuiman Township merged to form Wuzhishan commune.
In December 1958, Wuzhishan commune in Baisha County was under the jurisdiction of Qiongzhong County.
In May 1961, Wuzhishan commune was divided into Maoyang commune, Wuzhishan commune, Shiyun commune and Hongmao commune.
In May 1983, Maoyang commune was renamed Maoyang district office.
In June 1986, Maoyang District Office was put under the jurisdiction of Tongshi city.
In January 1987, it was renamed Maoyang town.
On July 5, 2001, Tongshi city was renamed Wuzhishan City, and Maoyang town was subordinate to Wuzhishan City.
