In the Han Dynasty, Nantong county was set up; in the sixth year of the Song Dynasty, Nantong county was set up by Emperor Hui of the Jin Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, the province entered Xiangcheng, in the Qing Dynasty, Nanji was set up, and in the Republic of China, districts were set up. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, it was the Sixth District. In 1958, Nantong commune was established. In December 1983, it was changed into Nantong township. In 1988, it was withdrawn from township to town.
