Creative background
In 1995, when Director Tian Xiaopeng was a junior, a friend copied him a 3D production software, which changed his fate. He deleted all the Games in the computer and began to focus on 3D animation. In 1997, he participated in the production of part of CCTV's domestic cartoon journey to the West. At that time, he cultivated the plot of great sage and had a bold idea: to make a series of three-dimensional animation journey to the West.
Tian Xiaopeng thinks that in the eyes of modern people, some points in the original book of journey to the west can not be understood, and some values are also in conflict with modern people. Therefore, he decided to tell a different journey to the west, which is more in line with the values and appreciation habits of modern people, and has magical characteristics. It will let the audience follow the growth footprints of Monkey King and Jiang liuer (Tang monk), and convincingly understand their mental journey of learning from experience.
The whole film has gone through eight years of brewing and three years of production. The world view of the film is based on the original novel Journey to the west, which is expanded and interpreted according to the traditional Chinese mythology.
There are heaven, man and earth in the world. The mission from heaven is to let Tang Monk go to the west to get back the Sutra, so as to benefit the world of monsters. Wukong and Bajie are all non mortal demons, but they are different from other demons. They once entered the immortal sequence of heaven, but they were demoted to the world for violating the rules of heaven. Because of the same mission, they are intertwined with the growth of Tang monk, from mutual strangeness, mutual separation, mutual escape, and even once for the enemy. It was not until the tenth generation of Tang monk that they were willing to protect Tang monk to the West. Before becoming a famous monk, Tang Monk experienced different life experiences or identities. Every time he experiences death, he forgets everything, reincarnates in a new time and space, and begins another journey in the world with mortal body and extraordinary love. The story of this work is set in the first life of the reincarnation of the tenth Tang monk.
Character design
The film does not use the monkey king design commonly used by the monkey king in the past. Tian Xiaopeng said that the monkey king in his mind should be a hero who is not good-looking, but rebellious and chivalrous. He hopes that the audience will like the character through the thick humanity of Wukong in the film, rather than simply accept it from the surface, and think that only in this way can the character stand up.
As Tian Xiaopeng's favorite role, "Jiang liu'er" carries the theme of the film, that is, persistence. It was this persistence that made him pursue justice without hesitation, and finally released the conscience of the monkey king, which helped him recover the power of the great sage.
