Sun Zongyi

(1612-1683), named Xiaoze, Yuqiao, was born on the Bank of Wushe Lake (now Minqiao Town, Jinhu County) in Gaoyou. The ancestor was Sun Jue, a famous scholar in the Northern Song Dynasty. At the end of Song Dynasty, the sun family stayed away from southern Jiangsu. At the beginning of Ming Dynasty, a group of Sun family returned to their ancestral home. They were the Jinshi of Dinghai in Shunzhi of Qing Dynasty. They successively served as the examiners of kaoshuntian County, the examiners of the Ministry of officials, wailang, the examiners of Henan Zhengkao in Jiawu, the examiners of Jixun, the examiners of Langzhong and Jizhou He was a doctor in the Ministry of officials, honest and self disciplined, and did not accept bribes.

When he was appointed as wailang, a member of the Ministry of official examination, some officials were appointed by urban workers. Sun Zongyi insisted on the principle and refused to pass. Sun Zongyi also wrote Yi Zong Ji Zhu, Lu Shu, AI RI Tang Shi Wen Ji and Chan Xi Wai Ji.

Sun Zongyi was upright and courageous. In 1683, he exposed the corruption and perversion of the law of the officials governing the river. He was retaliated and died in Yangzhou prison. It is recorded in the table of Zongyi cemetery by Xia Zhirong, the Hanlin of Gaoyou in the Qing Dynasty, and Beihu Xiaozhi by jiaoxun, the capital of Jiangdu.
