Huang Yu, whose name is Tingmei, calls himself shuanghuai old man. He was born in Xiangshan (now in Guangdong Province) and his date of birth and death is unknown. Xianzong of the Ming Dynasty lived around the middle of Chenghua period (around 1470), and all of them lived in the seventh year of Jingtai period (1456). When he took part in the joint examination, he was ranked second. Because he didn't want to be an unofficial official, he went to be a student. However, he didn't succeed in the joint examination for several years, so he had to start from a junior official. Later, he was promoted to the magistrate of Changle County, Huizhou. As a county magistrate, he had a good performance, and the people supported him. However, he was upright and unswerving. He didn't get along well with his superiors and couldn't get promoted many times. After 15 years as county magistrate, he abandoned his official position and returned to Huicheng, Guangzhou.

Personal life
Huang Yu, who was once in the ups and downs of officialdom, finally ignored the issue of fame. All day long, he either commented on poems and papers with his friends, or buried himself in writing books. He intentionally recorded folklore, historical stories, and sorted out some historical classics. Huang Yu had planted two locust trees at home. When the locust trees grew luxuriant, he built a simple Pavilion on the back of the tree, named shuanghuai Pavilion. He spent a lot of time under the pavilion after returning home. Huang Yu was known as Huang Yu. He often wrote poems and Fu under the pavilion. When he rose, he talked about singing and roaring, as if there were no one else. Because he was very fond of the two locust trees he planted, he not only called himself "old man shuanghuai", but also named his works "shuanghuai". He also wrote shuanghuaisui banknote.
When Huang Yu was 70 years old, the manuscript was officially completed. It took him nearly 40 years, during which he changed the manuscript several times and took a very serious attitude. In his preface to himself, he said: "every time you encounter what you see, hear and hear, you can easily record what you have seen and heard, and what you have talked about when you are small and vague." It can be seen that he devoted a lot of effort to this collection. We are not tired of big things, we are not tired of small things, we take everything seriously. He also said, "if you get the public opinions from the government and the public, you must prove them by compiling them. Must be quality to a wide range of people. If it's new and different, it's doubtful, and it's boring. " From this, we can infer two characteristics of this collection. One is that it focuses on textual research and does not please people with novelty. The article is slightly rigorous; the other is that it is compiled according to Huang Yu's personal views, from which we can analyze Huang Yu's views on the problems. It is said that the articles about the affairs of the pavilion, such as Guozi Shikui and Jiashen shujishi, were not finished until Huang Yu's grandson Huang Zuo found relevant information in the official documents to supplement them.
Huang Yu's articles of this kind are vivid in style, tortuous in plot and wonderful in dialogue, and have begun to take shape of novels. In addition, all the novels are written in vernacular with a little classical style, and they are skilled in description. It can be seen that by Huang Yu's time, the novels of Ming Dynasty had begun to take shape.
