Historical development
Origin of surname
Origin and development I
It comes from the surname Ji and comes from the descendants of Youyu, Shangqing of the state of Qin in the spring and Autumn period.
Youyu is a descendant of jiyuchen (also known as Bofu), the king of Zhou Dynasty. When he was sent to the state of Qin, Duke mu of Qin saw that he was talented, so he used the plan to keep it for his own use and let him be the prime minister. During Yu's term of office, he worked out strategies for Duke mu of Qin to attack the barbarians of Xirong, and helped Qin to destroy the twelve Xirong States and expand their territory for thousands of miles. The descendants of you Yu took his name as their surname, called you and Yu.
Origin and development II
Originating from the surname Si, it comes from Sihan, the youngest son of Emperor Yu in ancient times, and belongs to the surname given by the emperor. Dayu had his wife, Tu Shan's family. According to the records of "a study of surnames", it is said that Yu's family came after Xiayu. Yu had three sons. Qi, the eldest, was the son of heaven after Yu. The second son was named Xian. Sanzikong, also known as Han, was granted the title of yuduwang. Later, he took the fiefdom as his surname and called it Yushi.
Three sources
It originated from the Yuqiu family. It came from the princes of Qilu region during the spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. Because the fiefdom was in Yuqiu, the family called it Yuqiu family. Later it was simplified to single surname Yu.
Four sources
Originating from the place name, it comes from Baoxie plank road (Baoxie, also known as Baoyu) on Shu Road. It takes the name of the residence as its surname. Li Bai has a clear description of Baoyu plank road in his famous book Shu Dao Nan. Among the people, craftsmen, post office officials, and merchants who lived along Baoyu plank road for generations, most of the exiles with Qin surname in Hanzhong area of Shaanxi Province all had the surnames of Baoyu and Baoxie. Later, the provincial characters were simplified to single surnames of Baoyu, Yushi and Xieshi, and the pronunciation of Yushi was Xi é (ㄒㄧㄝ).

Ancestor of surname
You Yu: Shangqing of the state of Qin in the spring and Autumn period. The ancestors were originally from Jin Dynasty. Seeing Yu CAIDE, Duke mu of Qin took Yu as his prime minister and trusted him. At that time, as one of the many vassal states, Qin's status was not prominent. After Yu was the prime minister, he did not come out of the expectation of Mu Gong. He helped Mu Gong of Qin to plan a plan to attack Xirong, to destroy the Twelve Kingdoms, to expand the territory for thousands of miles, and to dominate Xirong. Finally, Mu Gong of Qin became one of the five rulers of the spring and Autumn period. You Yu is the first person who put forward the idea of "benevolent governance" in history. For details, please refer to historical records · Qin Benji. Youyu once laid a solid foundation for the prosperity and unification of the state of Qin, and later generations were proud of it. So they took its name as their surname and respected it as the ancestor of the surname Yu.
Migration distribution
The earliest birthplace of Yu's family should be in the area from Fengxiang to Xianyang, Shaanxi Province. Due to the lack of historical data, it is difficult to make a detailed study of the specific migration.
In the spring and Autumn period, the state of Qin was founded in Yong (today's Fengxiang southeast of Shaanxi Province), occupying the central part of Shaanxi Province and the southeast end of Gansu Province. Yuyu's descendants should breed in this area in the spring and Autumn period.
After the Qin and Han Dynasties, the people surnamed Yu moved eastward, one moved to Shanzhou (now Shanxian County, Sanmenxia City, Henan Province), and the other moved to Jiangnan, mainly in Anhui Province. In the north and south of our country, the descendants of the surname Yu basically propagated at the same time.
In the north, there were continuous wars and social unrest. The gentry in the Central Plains began to move southward for the first time. The place where the Yu family lived was just the right place, so it was inevitable for them to move southward. One of them continued to move southward into Hubei, Hunan and other places. In the early Jin Dynasty, Yu Zhaoyuan, a famous person with the surname of Yu, was granted the surname she by Wei Chi because of his great achievements. In the Southern Dynasty, there were more than 70 people in the Qi Dynasty, who were from Jinling (now Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province), and were famous for their filial piety.
In the early Tang Dynasty, Chen Yuanguang and his son came to Fujian and Kaizhang. In the middle of Tang Dynasty, there was Yu Qin, a Bachelor of Jixian Academy. At the end of Tang Dynasty, when Jianyang (now belonging to Fujian Province) was conquered by Huangchao, Yu Hao fled to Putian, then lived in seclusion in the countryside and cultivated in the hidden Hushan; Yu Yuanhai, who fled from Tongan, Fujian Province, moved to Shaowu, then transferred to Wuxi, Qujiang County (now belonging to Guangdong Province) in Guangqi period of Tang Fu Zong, was the ancestor of Yu. Soon after that, Yu Yuanhai's second son, Yu Xian, moved to Changsha, Hunan, his third son, Yu gun, moved to Hangzhou, Zhejiang, and his eldest son, Yu Cong, stayed there. The third son's descendants also moved to Fengxin, Linchuan, Wuhua, Meizhou, Dapu, Pingyuan and Haifeng in Jiangxi Province. By the Song Dynasty, the surname Yu was basically all over the country, and there were many talented people.
During the Hongwu Period of Ming Dynasty, the surname Yu, as one of the migration surnames of Hongdong Sophora japonica, was moved to Shaanxi, Gansu, Henan, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Hebei, Anhui and other places. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the surname Yu not only spread all over the south of the Yangtze River, but also developed in the north. In the Qing Dynasty, the surname of Yu moved to Taiwan from Fujian Province, and the famous figure was Yu Riqing, the leader of the Anti Japanese war. Since then, there have been immigrants, and the more famous one is Yu Fuqing, the former mayor of Sacramento, the capital city of California.
Nowadays, the surname Yu is widely distributed, especially in Sichuan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Hubei and other provinces.
