brief account of the author's life
Graduated from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Wang Rendong, formerly known as Yuda. He was born on March 25, 1908 in a doctor's family in Shanghai. His father, Wang Licai, was upright and devoted to the treatment and teaching of poor people. After the outbreak of the Sino Japanese War of 1894-1895, he changed the names of his three sons to "Rendong", "Pingyang" and "Youzhong" to express his resentment against the Japanese aggressors, implying that they would "pingdongyang" and "bless China" in the future. Influenced by his father's thought and the trend of "saving the country by science", Wang Rendong was determined to study angrily and serve the motherland. From 1921 to 1926, Wang Rendong studied in Nanyang middle school, ranking first in his class. Under the influence of progressive thought, he once participated in the May 30th Movement and served as the representative of Shanghai Federation of students and the director of fund-raising department. In 1926, he was admitted to the Mechanical Department of Shanghai Jiaotong University. Wang Rendong is eager to learn at school, and his academic performance is always in the first place. At the same time, he is also a famous sprinter and a good football player. He studies for more than ten hours and exercises for one or two hours every day. However, due to overwork, he was forced to leave school because of tuberculosis in the last half year of his university study. At that time, there was no medicine to cure the disease, only meditation. In 1935, he returned to school to take the graduation examination and completed his studies with excellent results. After graduating from University, he made a living in Dachang Industrial Company. In 1937, the Japanese invasion of Shanghai was imminent. Wang Rendong left the company and went to work in Hankou Jiji hydropower company. In 1938, he transferred to the machine factory of Kunming Resources Committee. Later, he resigned because of dissatisfaction with the corrupt style of the director and returned to his hometown in Shanghai. In order not to be a slave in the enemy occupied areas, in 1939, he was introduced by a good friend to Zhejiang University in Yishan, Guangxi by Haiphong, munanguan (today's friendship pass) and Liuzhou with his wife. Soon after the fall of Nanning, it moved to Zunyi, Guizhou Province with Zhejiang University. during the seven years in Zunyi Zhejiang University, because of the corruption and incompetence of the Kuomintang government, the majority of the people lived in dire straits, and the life of professors was also very difficult. Some professors, forced by life, take part-time courses or engage in small business; others become very depressed and play mahjong in their spare time; Wang Rendong, adhering to the purpose of "saving the country by science", has opened seven courses for students, including mechanical drawing, experience design, descriptive geometry, railway machinery, mechanism, mechanical design and mechanics of materials Not satisfied with the content of the existing textbooks, he always adds some new theoretical derivation and analysis to his class every year, so his lectures are very popular with students. In his second year at Zhejiang University, Zhu Kezhen, President of Zhejiang University, made an exception and appointed him as an associate professor. In 1946, he was recommended by Zhu Kezhen and went to the United States for investigation and further study at public expense. Due to his excellent work, he worked as a consultant engineer in the prestigious arischemus machinery manufacturing company in 1947. Since 1948, he has also been a visiting professor of Northwestern University of the United States, and has made important contributions to the stress calculation and crushing theory of large rotary kiln cylinder. The crushing work calculation formula proposed by him is still widely used in the crushing industry in the world. During his stay in the United States, he often attended progressive student gatherings. In 1949, when he heard the news that the people's Republic of China was about to be founded, he resolutely gave up his superior life in the United States, regardless of his personal safety, and returned to the embrace of his motherland on the second day after the founding of the people's Republic of China. After returning to China, Wang Rendong continued to teach in Zhejiang University. He has been engaged in teaching and scientific research for a long time. He has successively established the chemical machinery specialty and the Department of mechanics, and actively carried out scientific research. He has taken the lead in going deep into factories and enterprises to solve practical engineering problems. He has also opened more than 20 new courses for Undergraduates and postgraduates. He has spared no effort to cultivate young and middle-aged teachers and useful talents for the construction of the motherland. Wang Rendong has a high academic prestige in Zhejiang University and is the deputy director of the academic committee of the University. In 1956, he was awarded the second grade professor and was the tutor of doctoral students in two disciplines approved by the State Council. During this period, he also participated in the work of revitalizing the scientific cause of the motherland with great enthusiasm. He served as the director of the Chinese society of mechanics, chairman of the Chinese pressure vessel society, member of the discipline group of the State Science and Technology Commission, vice chairman of the Zhejiang Association for science and technology, member of the culture, education and science and Technology Committee of the Central Committee of the Democratic League of China, chairman of the Zhejiang society of mechanics and Zhejiang pressure vessel society, and member of the fifth Chinese people's Congress Representatives. all his life, Wang Rendong was open-minded, resolute, forthright and open-minded. He dared to adhere to the truth and tell the truth. Although he was impacted by the extreme left line in previous political movements, he did not shake his faith in the party at all. Since 1952, he asked to join the Communist Party of China. After the Party committee of Zhejiang University decided to study and approved by the Zhejiang provincial Party committee, he recognized Wang Rendong as a member of the Communist Party of China on March 5, 1983.
Teaching work
In 1952, the state adjusted the departments of colleges and universities, and decided to establish the specialty of chemical machinery in Zhejiang University, East China Institute of chemical technology and other colleges and universities. In 1954, Wang Rendong was immediately transferred to the Department of chemical engineering to undertake the task of preparing for the establishment of the major of chemical machinery after he had just established the Department of mechanics of Zhejiang University. At that time, China was very short of professionals in chemical machinery. On the one hand, he organized young and middle-aged teachers to participate in the training courses held by Soviet experts in China. On the other hand, he insisted: "in the entrepreneurial stage, we must never copy, nor be bound by foreign achievements. We must establish our own discipline system." His thought laid the foundation for the development of chemical machinery in China. In order to compile a set of advanced teaching materials for chemical machinery in line with China's national conditions, Wang Rendong not only put forward many useful suggestions, but also worked hard. He believes that: to make the chemical machinery major as popular as the "magic oil", we must have a solid foundation of mechanics and machinery. In 1959, he offered the basic course of chemical machinery for the first time. The opening of this pioneering course has further promoted the development of chemical machinery. Wang Rendong also actively recommended young teachers to participate in the compilation of the unified textbook, and personally guided two young teachers from Zhejiang University and East China Institute of chemical technology to compile the textbook of pump and compressor, the main course of chemical machinery specialty. He carefully revised the original manuscript and retouched the text for them. in order to make the students majoring in chemical machinery better adapt to the needs of factories, mines, enterprises and society after graduation, he advocated that the students should closely combine the technological innovation of factories and mines, carry out the graduation design of real weapons, and personally lead the students to participate in the design in the factory workshop for many times, so that the students can experience training in the actual production, so that they can quickly adapt to the working environment after graduation And carry the burden of work. Wang Rendong also launched the large graduation project of piston compressor for the first time in the major of chemical machinery in Colleges and universities, which further improved the quality of students. Later, when the centrifugal compressor began to replace the piston compressor in large foreign enterprises, he immediately digested the foreign information, and then started the course and graduation project of centrifugal compressor again in China, and began to write the handout of aerodynamics of centrifugal compressor and turbine compressor. In addition, as early as 1953, Wang Rendong put forward a proposal to organize graduate classes. He pointed out: "China must never rely entirely on Europe and the United States to cultivate its own talents, otherwise it will make the mistake of" colonial education ". Now it is time to stand up and take a step forward, enroll graduate students and set up graduate classes." He also believes that only by recruiting graduate students in combination with scientific research can the discipline have new development. Since 1961, he has been the first to recruit graduate students of chemical machinery in the fields of high pressure vessels and crushing machinery in China. After the "Cultural Revolution", he also recruited master degree students in solid mechanics and chemical machinery. He proposed to use the method of academic seminars to absorb a large number of "nutrients" around, and use the method of "snowballing" to make the graduate team develop rapidly and effectively. He has trained more than 20 doctoral and master's students for the country, and has made contributions to the development of chemical machinery discipline. He is recognized as the pioneer of chemical machinery discipline in China.
fracture mechanics
Promote the engineering application of fracture mechanics in China. In 1973, when Wang Rendong participated in the compilation of "technical progress of foreign pressure vessels", he saw the rise of a new discipline fracture mechanics abroad, and took the initiative to undertake the compilation of this difficult new topic. He works every day
