Liang Dongcai is mainly engaged in protein crystallography and structural biology.
Character experience
Liang Dongcai was born in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province on May 29, 1932. His mother, Liang Liu, died early, leaving Liang Dongcai's brothers and sisters to be cared for by his grandmother. His father, Liang Shi, had only enough income to support his family. It was very difficult to support their brothers and sisters to go to school. In 1951, he was admitted to the Department of chemistry, Sun Yat sen University. He graduated from Department of chemistry, Sun Yat sen University in 1955. In 1956, he was selected to study in the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union, majoring in X-ray crystal structure analysis. in 1960, he graduated from the Institute of elemental organic compounds of the Academy of Sciences of the Soviet Union and obtained an associate doctorate. He was a visiting scholar at the Royal Institute and Oxford University from 1965 to 1967. in 1980, he was elected member (academician) of the academic department of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. From 1983 to 1986, he was the second director of the Institute of Biophysics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1985, he was elected to the Third World Academy of Sciences.
Main achievements
Achievements in scientific research
Liang Dongcai used X-ray protein crystallography as the research method, determined the three-dimensional structure of biomacromolecules and their complexes, and explored the relationship between the three-dimensional structure and biological function of biomacromolecules. In the early 1960s, the crystal structures of a number of organic compounds were determined, and the first computer program library for crystal structure analysis in China was established together with the cooperative units. At the end of the 1960s, he participated in the determination of the crystal structure of pig insulin. Since the early 1980s, he has been in charge of the research on the three-dimensional structure and function of insulin, and many research achievements have reached the international advanced level. In the 1990s, important results have been obtained in the study of enzyme molecules with important biological functions and the three-dimensional structure and function of phycobiliprotein pigment complexes in algal light harvesting system. In the late 1990s, he actively promoted and participated in the research of structural genomics in China. Using X-ray crystal structure analysis method, combined with biochemistry, molecular biology and cell biology techniques, we studied the three-dimensional structure and function of functional proteins and their complexes in DNA damage repair HRR repair pathway in prokaryotes and eukaryotes (mammals). In addition, we also carried out some structural biology research on some important proteins related to human diseases . as of September 2014, Liang Dongcai has published more than 140 natural science papers, monograph "X-ray crystallography basis", etc., and the representative papers are as follows: Tang Q., Gao P., Liu y.p., Gao A., anx.
