Historical evolution
In the 24th year of Guangxu (1898 AD), the Ministry of industry of the public concession built a cemetery at Jing'an Temple Road, commonly known as "foreign cemetery mountain". In 1953, the Municipal People's government invested 180000 yuan to transform the cemetery into a park, which was opened on October 3, 1955.
After the "Cultural Revolution" began in 1966, the office building of Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China adjacent to the park was impacted. The lawn in the west of the park was set up as a poster area for big character newspapers. Rows of reed mat sheds were covered with big character newspapers. The flow of people in the park was like a tide, the order was disordered, and most of the trees, flowers and plants were trampled. From 1971 to 1972, an underground air defense project was built in the park. The park was closed and the greening was damaged again.
Since 1973, it has carried out comprehensive reconstruction, using the excavated air defense works to transform the terrain, adjusting the greening layout, building new sales department and corridor, and renovating roads and sewers. At the end of 1974, Yan'an Hotel returned to the park the auditorium and crematorium of the former Jing'an Temple cemetery (covering an area of 2000 square meters). In 1978, the auditorium and crematorium were demolished. A two-story teahouse with an area of 220 square meters, a basement with an area of 100 square meters and an open-air stage with an area of 100 square meters were built on the spot. A video game Racecourse with an area of 237 square meters was built in the East.
In October 1998, the people's Government of Jing'an District of Shanghai decided to reconstruct Jing'an park by taking the opportunity of the construction of Yan'an Road Viaduct of Metro Line 2. The purpose is to create an open urban garden with people-oriented, modern garden characteristics and historical and cultural connotation, integrating leisure, fitness, entertainment, viewing and tourism. The park was designed by Japanese architectural design firm and constructed by Shanghai Jing'an District Landscaping Development Co., Ltd. On September 25, 1999, after the reconstruction was completed, it was opened to the public free of charge.

Garden appearance
When the park was first built, the original trees in the cemetery were retained, including Platanus acerifolia, Ginkgo biloba, and Podocarpus arvensis, which were more than 50 or 60 years old at that time. The trees are tall, shady, and lush, adding color to the park. The park is surrounded by thick coral trees, oleander, camphor, metasequoia, etc., which protect the residential buildings. Since 1981, Camellia has been introduced into the park with many varieties and wide publicity, which has become a feature of the park.

boulevard
The Boulevard is located at the entrance of the north gate of the park. It is 100 meters long and 27 meters wide. There are 32 tall and shady Platanus trees on the side of the road. There are rows of seats under the shade of the trees. The site is broad, and it is cool and pleasant in hot summer. It is most popular among tourists. The layout on both sides of the avenue is basically symmetrical, with lawn as the main part, flowers planted beside the lawn, and oleander, palm, Magnolia grandiflora, etc. planted outside the lawn. Rhododendron and Camellia are planted in the flower bed on the east side, and three Taihu stone peaks are standing in the middle, which are high and low and exquisite.
Central Plaza
The central square is located in the middle of the park, and it enters the second gate through the avenue. The two doors are composed of trellis, flower wall and flower bed. There are climbing plants on the trellis and leaky windows on the flower wall. The wall connects the sales department in the East and the corridor in the West. The south of the central square is the open-air stage and tea room, which is on the central axis with the gate. The teahouse has two floors. There is a corridor in front of the building. You can enjoy the view of the garden with the railing. The teahouse is adjacent to the goldfish pond in the southwest. On the Bank of the pond, Taihu stone rockery is built according to the building, and the escalator is hung over the pond. You can see the water lily and goldfish in the pond when you climb up the building. There is a ginkgo tree more than 120 years old standing in the corner gate of the park on the west side of the building. The corridor on the west side of the gate is a compound corridor in the north, which turns south and west again. The total length is 40 meters, the width is 2.8 meters, and the area is 112 square meters. There are flower windows, picture screens and moon shaped doors, stone tables and benches, and terrazzo benches on both sides of the corridor. There is a semicircular goldfish pond in front of the corridor. Water lilies are planted in the pond, and lake stones are dotted in the pond. There is a pavilion on the east side of the teahouse. There are many stone tables and benches beside the pavilion.
East lawn
East lawn is located in the center of Guangdong side, separated by trees, covering an area of 2490 square meters. In the northwest, there is a white marble Pavilion reconstructed from a tomb. It is exquisitely carved and has a unique structure. It has marble tables and benches, covering an area of 20 square meters. On the east side of the pavilion is a white jade statue of a female teacher built on September 10, 1986 on Teachers' day. On the north side of the pavilion is a children's paradise, covering an area of 250 square meters. There are various children's amusement facilities. There is a hundred year old Podocarpus arvensis in the northwest corner, which is covered like a basin.
Tea garden
Tea garden is located in the south of East lawn, which is composed of 12 flower beds of different sizes and shapes, mainly planting camellia and rose. Since 1981, more than 1000 Camellia plants of more than 30 varieties have been purchased from other places, and they are mainly arranged in the tea garden. Camellia blooms one after another from February to May every year, attracting countless visitors. At the same time, according to different seasons, with a variety of grass, lined with velvet turf, red and green, especially pleasing.
West Lawn
The west lawn is located in the southwest of the park. From the central square to the west, through the trees, there is a small rockery made of Lake stones. Around the rockery is the open West Lawn. The lawn is close to Huashan Road in the West and Yan'an middle road in the south, covering an area of 3450 square meters. In 1988, the fence along the road was changed into iron grid through wall, in which all kinds of flowering shrubs and tall trees were planted. In the southeast of the lawn, there are undulating earth mountains and pools surrounded by Lake stone revetments. The earth mountain is covered with flowering shrubs, such as jasmine, pomegranate, oleander, laurel, Begonia, Euonymus japonicus, Podocarpus arvensis, etc. Pool area of 390 square meters, winding quiet. Bajingyuan
In ancient times, there were eight places of interest in the ancient Jing'an Temple and its surrounding areas, known as "eight Jing'an sceneries". According to the records of Jing'an eight chants collected by monk Shouning of the Yuan Dynasty temple, these eight sceneries are hudu Lei, Chen Chaohui, luzidou, chiwu tablet, Yongquan, Lvyun cave, lectern and xiazitan.
In 1998, when Jing'an Park was rebuilt, it took eight sceneries as the main scenery, and used the Chinese characteristics of "seeing the big from the small" and "covering the depth of field"
