Nanshan cliff carvings
Nanshan cliff carvings are located on the hillside stone wall in the south of Pingshan Town, Yuhang District, Hangzhou. There are 13 single cliff carvings of Buddhism and Taoism in the Yuan Dynasty. They are tall and dignified. They have high historical value and artistic research value. They are provincial cultural protection units.
Nanshan cliff carvings are a rare group of stone carvings in the south of the Yangtze River. The biggest feature of the carvings is the unity of Buddhism and Taoism. In addition to the most Western statue of emperor Zhenwu, which is an obvious Taoist statue, the other 12 are all Buddhist statues. According to the inscriptions beside the Buddha statues, these Buddha statues were carved in 1328, belonging to the middle and late Yuan Dynasty. At that time, the monks of Yuan Dynasty used the early stone wall to organize craftsmen to chisel out the relief figures in shallow niches, stretching from west to East for more than 360 meters. After nearly a thousand years, under the influence of long-term natural and man-made factors, the stone surface of statues, stone carvings, inscriptions and so on appeared different degrees of disease and weathering, and some statues faced collapse. Therefore, Yuhang District government invested more than 6 million yuan to repair and protect this precious cultural site. The cultural relics department of the district commissioned the China Institute of cultural relics to survey and design, formulate the repair plan, and through expert argumentation, with the approval of the Provincial Bureau of cultural relics, Nanjing Museum won the bid for the construction of the first phase project. The statue body was cleaned, the surface was weathered, the dangerous rock was reinforced, and the waterproof system was added. The second phase project will improve and optimize the surrounding environment.
It is believed that in the near future, Nanshan cliff stone sculpture group will become an important cultural and historical tourist attraction in Yuhang.
