Liu Haisu, formerly known as pan, was named haiweng. He was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province in March 1896. Good at oil painting, Chinese painting, art education. He was fond of painting and calligraphy when he was young. At the age of 14, he went to Shanghai to study western painting. In 1910, he set up a picture studio in the village. In November 1912, he, together with Wu Shiguang and Zhang Yuguang, founded the first fine arts school in modern China in Shanghai (the predecessor of Shanghai Academy of fine arts, Shanghai Academy of traditional Chinese painting). The first coeducation, using mannequins and travel sketching, was denounced as "art traitor", but was supported by scholars such as Cai Yuanpei.. In 1918, he gave lectures at Peking University and held the first personal painting exhibition. In 1919, he went to Japan to study art education and founded Tianma club after returning home.
He has successively served as president, honorary president and professor of Nanjing Academy of art, and honorary chairman of Shanghai Artists Association. Consultant of China Artists Association and member of Standing Committee of CPPCC. "Outstanding achievement award" awarded by Cambridge International Communication Center. The European Academy of Italy awarded the "European palm Gold Award". He has published the collection of Liu Haisu's paintings, selected oil paintings of Liu Haisu, traditional Chinese paintings of Liu Haisu and the true interpretation of learning painting.

Liu Haisu's former residence is located at 512 Fuxing Middle Road, Shanghai. It is an early French independent four story garden house with walls built along the street.

The outer wall of the first floor of the building is decorated with pebbles, while the outer wall of the second floor is a red brick fair faced wall with rectangular and arched windows, and the roof is a red tile four slope top. There are some small bonsai in the courtyard, and climbing plants are climbing on the walls. The interior is made of willow eucalyptus wood floor with teak wall protection. The plaster decoration on the ceiling is very exquisite. There is a fireplace. The house was built by Zhu Baoshan, an industrialist in old Shanghai. In the 1930s, Liu Haisu rented and lived until he died.
