)
Huiwen academy period
The predecessor of Jinling university is Nanking University (1888-1910), which was established in Nanjing in 1888. The academy has a museum (Arts and Sciences), a medical school (Medicine) and a Shinto school (Theology). In 1890, it was established as the middle school department. Huiwen college is the earliest source of Jinling University. It was founded by the American Church of America and Israel. The college is located along the Ganhe River in Nanjing. It is the first new school in Nanjing. It has been running for more than 20 years, laying the foundation for the establishment of Jinling University. During the steady development of Huiwen academy, Nanjing, which was regarded as an important town by missionaries, added another two missionary Academies: Christian Academy and Yizhi Academy. In 1907, the two academies were merged into union Christian College, with Christian College as the site. Meizaizhong was the president and Wen Huaien was the vice president.
Nanking Christian College was founded by the Christian Church of America in 1891. The founder is F. rank E. Meigs, an American Christian missionary. He is a native of New York. His parents work in agriculture and believe in Christianity. He arrived in Nanjing in January 1887, appointed by the missionary mission of the United States. He was determined to live in China, so he called himself "Zai Zhong". At first, Mei Zai Zhong stayed with marlin, a doctor of Christian Hospital. At that time, although "there were more and more converts to Christianity in Nanjing", he thought that "although the belief was new, the wisdom was still the same, and he was deeply afraid that the belief without wisdom would easily lead to magic obstacles, without instilling wisdom, there would be no fundamentalism". So he asked the Christian Church to donate money to build a Christian Academy in the southwest of Nanjing Drum Tower. The United States was elected president of the Chinese Communist Party. There were 20 students at the time of opening. A few years later, it reached more than 200.
The Presbyterian Academy was founded by American Presbyterian Church in 1894. It is located in Hubu street, Nanjing. He Zixia, an American Presbyterian missionary, was the founder, and later succeeded by j.e.williams. Wen Huaien and Mei came to China at the same time and founded Christian Academy together.
Establishment and development period
From 1910 to 1927, Jinling University was established and developed. In 1910, the Church of the United States merged Huiwen college and Hongyu college to establish Jinling University (renamed Jinling university with Beijing Normal University in 1915). American Bao Wen served as president and Wen Huaien as vice president. Li Ruiqing, a famous calligrapher and supervisor of Liangjiang Normal School, inscribed the name of the school.
Jinling university took Huiwen academy as its school site, and later moved to the new school building on the southwest slope of Gulou (now the North Garden of Gulou campus of Nanjing University). Based on the American university education system, it has gradually developed into a comprehensive university with a certain scale.

1、 The three academies merged and Jinling University was established
At the beginning of the 20th century, China's state-run universities were developing day by day. In addition to Beijing Normal University, many provinces also set up universities. Nanjing Sanjiang normal school was set up at this time. The development of China's new-style big schools has stimulated the church schools. The church has begun to "worry about the government's competition in education" and "unless it concentrates its efforts, the government-run schools will surpass them. If church schools don't add complete laboratories and libraries, and don't hire more and better teachers, then excellent students will be attracted by government schools. ". So many famous missionaries urged the United College to expand its scale and build a university worthy of its name "in order to become an example of the National University".
In the process of the union, because of the different opinions within the church, there were all kinds of disputes, so the Union went through many twists and turns, but in the end it was successful. At that time, in addition to Jinling University, there were Huiwen University in Beijing (the predecessor of Yanjing University), St. John's University and Hujiang University in Shanghai, Zhijiang University in Hangzhou, Shandong Christian Republic university (the predecessor of Qilu University), and West China Union University in Chengdu. These universities later developed into famous missionary universities.
Jinling university is a combination of Huiwen academy and other two academies: Christian Academy and Yizhi Academy. The three academies are in full swing in Nanjing.
The three academies are all boys' schools with the same aims and methods.
The United States first proposed to merge academies in China. He believes that "if you go alone, you will be able to disperse your energy and achieve less success; if you work together, you will be able to gather the best and achieve more success.". Moreover, when the Church of the motherland gathers money to run education, it should make the best use of the least amount of money, or it will be punished by heaven! " In 1906, yizhi Academy was incorporated into Christian Academy. In 1907, there was a proposal to merge Huiwen college and Hongyu college, but it was not successful because of the objection of the dean of Huiwen college, Mr. Toure.
Bao Wen, the new president of Huiwen college, is a missionary who is enthusiastic about education. He is a native of lipanse, Illinois, and graduated from the Department of literature at the University of nekes. He came to China in 1897. He "has the courage to do things, especially the foresight.". He thought, "China's difficulties are very urgent. It is not enough to save itself without educating the new people. The purpose of education should be pure, the scale should be broad, and the organization and equipment should be sound and perfect. Then it can be said that talents can be used for the society. Today, there are three schools in Nanjing. They have different policies, multiple courses, and limited funds. They are not allowed to provide facilities. They are bound to follow suit, and they are futile I don't know what it's good for China, but it's also against the purpose of running our school! " Both Bao Wen and the United States advocate merging academies and establishing a complete university. However, the merger method is "very discordant with each other at the beginning". After repeated negotiations, it was decided that Hongyu would be incorporated into Huiwen and named the University of Nanking. Bao Wenren
