Mosques in Western Shanghai
Huxi mosque, formerly known as xiaoshaduhui church, also known as yaoshuinong mosque, commonly known as the old temple, is located in yaoshuinong, Putuo District, covering an area of 1125 square meters. Around 1914, the area around xiaoshabo (now Xikang Road) was sparsely populated and deserted. Japanese Cotton Textile Co., Ltd. built factories in the leased land, and national enterprises also began to rise here, gradually forming a seven room Industrial Zone in Western Shanghai.
Historical evolution
During the reconstruction of the mosque, the Civic Committee, the City Association for Iraq and other relevant departments, as well as Muslims at home and abroad, have given great concern and economic support. In 1934, the Islamic educator, the phonologist of the Koran and the famous arxun maijunsan (1888-1967) presided over the educational affairs of the temple.
In 1921, with the donation of the board of directors of Shanghai halal, it rented 0.8 mu of land in yaoshuinong to build the mosque, which was completed in 1922 and expanded to 1125 square meters.
Since 1947, Imam Ma Renbin (currently president of Shanghai Association for Iraq) has been the abbot of the temple for many years. The work of temple affairs includes the management of Muslim society, Ma Tianying, Li Yushu, Ma Shaosheng, Ma Yifang, Li Dejun, Bai Hengxiang and so on, who have served as directors. Ma Yifang, the leader of the society, is responsible for the management of the Chinese Muslim propaganda Institute, Yude hall and baiyufang women's school. Wu Tianying (1900-1982), chairman of the Council of the temple in 1947, is also an outstanding Hui social activist in China. Li Yunsheng, a member of our school, is the head of Jinliyuan branch of China Merchants Group. He is enthusiastic about religious education, cultural education and philanthropy. He generously donated money to establish the private Yunsheng primary school in Western Shanghai. In 1947, it was changed to build a primary school. Ma Tianying and Ma Renbin successively served as principals. The school developed into Putuo District Hui Primary School. The temple has two imams, seven school directors, more than 100 scriptures, and many Hui, Uygur and other ethnic religious people. Affiliated groups are Hui marriage agency and Hui wushu team.
