Zhongshan Wharf

The history of wharf construction on Xiaguan River can be traced back to baishibu, a military wharf built around Laohushan in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Up to the Southern Song Dynasty, Longwan ferry, one of the six ferries of the Yangtze River, was the place for water transportation. The modern ferry transportation was started by Pukou market bureau with private financing in 1910, and the route from Xiaguan to Pukou was called "guanpu line".
In 1928, the Nationalist government decided to build a wharf beside Xiaguan River to meet the coffin of Dr. Sun Yat Sen and named it the capital wharf of Jinpu railway. After the Fengan ceremony, in memory of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, the Xiaguan wharf where the coffin landed was named Zhongshan wharf, which is still in use today.
Historical evolution
The history of wharf construction on Xiaguan River can be traced back to baishibu, a military wharf built in the area of Laohushan in the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Up to the Southern Song Dynasty, Longwan ferry, one of the six ferries of the Yangtze River, was the place for water transportation.
Modern ferry transportation was started by Pukou market bureau with private financing as late as the second year of Xuantong in the late Qing Dynasty (1910). The route from Xiaguan to Pukou was called "guanpu line".
In 1913 (the second year of the Republic of China), Lunbu office was set up in Jinpu Railway Bureau to take over the ferry business, and the ferry business was transferred to the state.
In 1928 (the 17th year of the Republic of China), the wharf was completed on August 8. In order to ensure the smooth progress of Dr. Sun Yat Sen's feng'an ceremony, the national government decided to build a wharf beside the Xiaguan River to welcome Mr. Sun's coffin. And it was named capital wharf of Jinpu railway.
On May 28, 1929, Dr. Sun Yat Sen's coffin arrived at Xiaguan riverside Wharf (today's Zhongshan wharf), and entered Nanjing city from yijiangmen. After the feng'an ceremony, in memory of Dr. Sun Yat Sen, all the places where the coffin went were named "Zhongshan", such as Zhongshan Gate, Zhongshan Bridge, Zhongshan Road, etc. The Xiaguan wharf where the coffin landed was also named Zhongshan wharf, which is still in use today.
In 1933, Nanjing Railway Bureau rebuilt Zhongshan wharf and built a 100 meter long barge, three steel trestles and a waiting room. Then, the road from the wharf to yijiangmen was widened and a large parking lot was built.
On March 15, 1936, Zhongshan wharf was officially named and the attached waiting room and bus station were opened.
On April 23, 1949, the Chinese people's Liberation Army crossed the Yangtze River and occupied Nanjing. The troops crossing the Yangtze River landed near Zhongshan wharf and entered Nanjing city from yijiangmen. Since then, Zhongshan wharf and its neighboring yijiangmen and Xiaguan Power Plant have become important places to commemorate the battle of crossing the Yangtze River. More people suggest that the memorial hall of crossing the Yangtze River be built at Zhongshan wharf.
With the recovery of Nanjing's economy, as the only channel to cross the river at that time, Zhongshan wharf was busy with transportation. JAL has about 150 flights during peak hours.
On January 3, 1967, the fighting of "Cultural Revolution" caused the traffic interruption in Nanjing, and the ferry of Zhongshan Wharf in Xiaguan was stopped.
In 1968, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was completed and opened to traffic. The demand of ferry crossing the river was greatly alleviated, and the passenger flow of Zhongshan wharf also decreased rapidly. Especially with the shutdown of Nanjing North Railway Station (Pukou railway station) in 2004, the demand for ferry crossing the river further decreased.
On May 9, 1992, the new waiting room of Zhongshan wharf was opened.
On June 3, 2008, Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge was deformed due to the fire at the south approach bridge opening, and traffic control was implemented. Zhongshan wharf was in operation at the peak to divert the passenger flow across the river.
In May 2012, Xiaguan District government, housing and Urban Rural Development Bureau and Xiaguan Binjiang Development and construction headquarters began to build the new Zhongshan wharf, and decided to restore it to the style of the Republic of China.
