Construction background
In the fourth year of Kaicheng period of Tang Dynasty (839 AD), Japanese eminent monk master Yuanren and his party entered the Tang Dynasty to seek Dharma. They lived in Chishan fahua academy, which is located in the south foot of Chishan mountain in the north of Shidao Town, Shandong Province. They studied the politics, economy, culture, religion, architecture and other aspects of the Tang Dynasty, and they succeeded in seeking Dharma in the Tang Dynasty. On the way home, the ship suddenly encountered a storm at sea. When the ship was in danger, Yuan Ren worshipped Chishan, prayed for the protection of Chishan's God, and vowed: "on the day of his own country, he will build a shrine to worship forever." In an instant, a huge colorful halo appeared on the peak of Chishan mountain. Then, the bright god of Chishan appeared and shot a white arrow into the air. The sea was calm and the waves were calm, and the sky was clear. Yuanren and his party saved the danger and returned home safely.
After Yuanren returned to his country, he consecrated the Ming God of Chishan as the patron god of Tiantai Sect. Following his will, his disciples built a temple in Kyoto, Japan, called "Chishan Zen Temple", which became one of the seven ancient temples in Kyoto.
