Development and evolution
Qingdao zoo was officially established on September 1, 1977. Its predecessor is a garden in the garden of Zhongshan Park, and its history can be traced back to the early 20th century.
Zhongshan Park period
Animal exhibition in Qingdao has a long history. In 1915, the Japanese colonial authorities set aside 30 mu of land on the southwest side of the plant testing ground (later Zhongshan Park), built a bear cage and a waterfowl cage, initially built a bear cage, two garden shaped monkey cages, a simple plum deer garden and a waterfowl cage for viewing. The animals on display include black bear, Guangxi monkey, Taiwan Monkey, sika deer, duck, goose, wild goose, crane, etc., which are part of the animal exhibition of "Xu Park" and the prototype of Qingdao zoo.
After the Beiyang government took back Qingdao, jiaoao commercial port agriculture and forestry office repaired the original bear cage and bird cage in 1923; in 1931, the agriculture and forestry office also repaired the above animal cage, adding two monkey cages and one deer shed fence at the same time. In 1933, a leopard cage of reinforced concrete structure was built with two leopards inside.
During Japan's second occupation of Qingdao, a stable was built in 1939 with a chrysanthemum green horse. On the wall of the stable, there are stone tablets in Chinese, Japanese and English characters to record the incident. In the same year, it was rated as "open source Shenjun" and one of the 24 townships in Qingdao. During the second reign of the Nanjing National Government, the parks were not well managed, the animal cages were in disrepair, and the animals were out of stock. There were few animals on display, and the specific number was not available. At that time, the Zhongshan Park was seriously damaged, and almost all the animals on display were destroyed. When Qingdao was liberated in June 1949, there were only bears, monkeys and deer in Zhongshan Park, and the cage area was less than 100 square meters.
After the founding of the people's Republic of China, the animal exhibition in Zhongshan park developed. From the 1950s to the mid-1960s, with the government's investment, the Zoo began to form a large scale.
In the 1950s, the Zoo began to be renovated and expanded on its original site. In 1953, a wolf cage was built; in 1954, a tiger cage was built; in 1955, a peacock cage, a monkey cage and a bird comprehensive cage were built; in 1957, a lion cage was built, which was of wood structure and rebuilt into reinforced concrete structure in 1961; in 1962, an EMU cage was built; in 1963, a small animal cage was built. By 1966, there were 88 species of animals in Zhongshan Park, including more than 20 species of precious animals such as giant panda, red panda, golden monkey, lion, tiger, brown bear, EMU, Red Crowned Crane, red faced crane, pelican, sunflower parrot, Wren, Sichuan parrot and Hainan parrot.
The zoo is surrounded by thick wooden piles and bamboo poles. Hedges are planted around the fence, covering an area of more than 30 mu. There are two main roads in the park, one is Bitao Road, and the other is Meihua road. The zoo has three gates. The main gate is located in the west side of the entrance of the South Gate of Zhongshan Park. The whole gate is of wood structure, and plants are planted on the top of the gate. The other two doors are set at the East and West ends of Meihua road.
At the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution", the management of the park was chaotic, the development planning of the zoo was greatly hindered, and the normal animal management could not be implemented, resulting in the number of animal species falling to more than 60. A large number of precious animals such as giant panda, red panda, golden monkey, EMU, Wren, sunflower parrot and Hainan parrot have died one after another.
It recovered in the 1970s. In 1973, the wolf house was rebuilt; in the same year, Mr. Li Zuoji, a Hong Kong patriot, presented a white handed Gibbon to Zhongshan Park; in 1974, the deer garden and camel garden were rebuilt; since 1975, some precious animals such as black leaf monkey, flat top Monkey (Macaca mulatta), bear monkey and spotted hornbill have been introduced from Guangxi and other places. From 1976 to 1978, Mr. Li Zuoji successively presented chimpanzees (7 in total), baboons, mandrills, black swans and other precious animals. A pair of big grey kangaroos were introduced from Australia and raised in the temporary museum in the south of monkey mountain. Therefore, it is planned to build a new zoo area on the northern hillside of Zhongshan Park.
New site planning and construction period
The current site of Qingdao zoo is a slope land high in the north and low in the south, which was originally under the management of Zhongshan Park. Before the establishment of the park, the south section of Mingxia road to the north gate of Zhongshan Park was divided into East and west parts, with dense trees in the East and gentle slopes and open terrain in the West. There are scattered buildings in the southeast corner of Mingxia Road, which is the deer farm and animal feed storage place of Zhongshan Park.
In 1976, according to the needs of urban landscape development, the municipal landscape department proposed to move the Qingdao zoo to a medium scale on the basis of the original animal exhibition area of Zhongshan Park. With a planning area of 299700 square meters, it is divided into seven exhibition areas, namely, front area, songbird area, beast area, primate area, herbivore area, medium animal area, small animal area and amphibian area, with a total investment of 1.23 million yuan. In January 1977, the animal conservation group of Zhongshan Park was officially separated from Zhongshan Park. It built animal cages in the north of Zhongshan Park and moved animals one after another. Qingdao zoo, covering an area of 279000 square meters, was built.
In August 1977, it was examined and approved by Qingdao Urban Construction Bureau and named Qingdao zoo in September of the same year.

By 1988, except for the cancellation of the amphibian area, the construction of the park was basically completed according to the plan. During this period, a total of 16840 square meters of construction area were completed, including the West and North Gate (including the fire passage of the North Gate), the front area, hundred bird cage, peacock hall, songbird hall, walking bird hall, raptor hall, pheasant hall, orangutan hall, ape hall, monkey mountain, camel garden, deer garden, Shihu mountain, medium animal cage and small animal cage, etc In addition, a large number of cedar, juniper, ginkgo, cherry, peach, Begonia, jasmine, forsythia and other plants are planted to afforest and beautify the environment of the park.
After the completion of the songbird hall and the hundred bird cage in 1979, the first batch of birds entered the new park; in the same year, the ape hall was built, and the apes and monkeys moved to new houses; while building, opening. In the same year, tickets were sold separately in front of the gate of monkey mountain. In 1980, three new animal cages were built and a number of animals were moved; in 1981, one peacock building and one bird hall were built; the west gate of the new zoo was completed in the same year; in 1982, three pheasant cages and some medium-sized animal cages were built; in 1985, monkey mountain was built; in 1988, Shihu mountain was built. So far, all the work of moving all the animals to the new park has been completed. Qingdao zoo is open to the public with a new look.
