Temple of the Virgin Mary

Wanjin Notre Dame temple, founded in 1861, was founded by father Guo Degang, a priest of the Spanish Daoist church. When father Guo Degang came to Wanjin, he found that the local Pingpu aborigines had simple customs, but they were crowded out by the neighboring Hakka villages, so he decided to set up a church here to preach. At the beginning, it was a local church. Later, it was destroyed by the earthquake in 1865, so a new church was built in 1869, The new church is 45 feet wide, 116 feet long, with a wall height of 215 feet and a wall thickness of 3 feet (all of the above are platform feet). Instead of reinforcing steel bars, it is made of gravel, lime, brown sugar, honey, kapok and firebrick, which are extremely hard. The building materials are made of wood rafts made of Fushan from Fuzhou, drifting to Donggang with the tide, Most of the masons came from Fuzhou, Xiamen and Penghu. The hall bells came from Spain. The sedan chair for the procession was carved on the feet of famous engravers in Fujian. It is beautiful and complete for more than 100 years

Temple of the Virgin Mary

Located in Wanjin village, Wanluan Township, Pingtung County, Wanjin holy land is the oldest church in Taiwan and the holy land of the Virgin Mary in Taiwan. Wanjin WanMu temple is 45 feet wide, 116 feet long, 25 feet high and 3 feet thick. The whole building is replaced by the traditional Chinese architecture of gravel, lime, brown sugar, honey, kapok and firebrick. It is built into a thick and hard external wall. The church bell in Spain and the lady's sedan carved by Fujian sculptors are used for the procession. The ground is paved with red bricks to match the original style of the church. The sight is clear The walls of the sanctuary are painted with white lime, which is easy to see and becomes a local landmark.

Historical development

In 1861, father Guo Degang, a Spanish Taoist priest, came to Wanjin from Qianjin in Kaohsiung to preach.

In 1984, Pope John Paul II granted the "Temple of the Virgin Mary".

In 2001, the clock tower was restored.

In 1874, when Shen Baozhen saw the magnificence of the church, he asked the emperor to support the missionary, and the Tongzhi emperor personally issued "Fengzhi" and "God" In 1984, Pope John Paul II granted the title of "Notre Dame", which is second only to the Vatican and the Vatican. In June 2001, the hall of Notre Dame was renovated and the bell tower was restored.
