Shanghai Academy of drama is a higher art college in China to train drama professionals, formerly known as Shanghai Municipal experimental drama school. It was founded on December 1, 1945 by famous educator Gu Yuxiu and famous dramatists Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi and Huang zuolin, and Mr. Xiong Fusi was the first president of the Academy. In October 1949, Shanghai Municipal experimental drama school was renamed Shanghai Municipal drama college. In 1952, colleges and universities across the country adjusted their departments. The drama department of the Art Department of Shandong University and the drama troupe of Shanghai Xingzhi art school were merged into the Academy, which was officially established and renamed as the East China branch of the Central Academy of drama. In 1956, it was officially named Shanghai drama academy, a higher art college directly under the Ministry of culture. In April 2000, it was transferred to Shanghai and the Ministry of culture. In June 2002, the former school of performing arts of Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai Opera School and Shanghai dance school were merged into Shanghai Drama College.

Historical evolution
Shanghai Experimental Drama School
On December 1, 1945, with the support of Gu Yuxiu, then director of Shanghai Education, Shanghai experimental drama school was founded by dramatists Li Jianwu, Gu Zhongyi, Huang zuolin and Wu Renzhi. The school takes over the former Japanese elementary school (now the location of Hongkou teachers' Training Institute) located in Yokohama bridge, north-west Sichuan Road as the school site. In November 1945, it began to recruit new students from the drama cast group, technical group and research class (director group), and started school in December. Famous dramatists (Writers) Hong Shen, Ouyang Yuqian, Xiong Foxi, Cao Yu, Chen Baichen, Yang Cunbin, Wu Renzhi, Zhao Jingshen, Zhang Jinyi, etc. have all come to the school to teach successively.
In October 1946, the school launched a school nursing struggle in protest against the resolution of "Abolishing drama schools" passed by the Shanghai Municipal Council. East China branch of Central Academy of drama
In September 1952, colleges and universities across the country adjusted their departments. The drama department of the Art Department of Shandong University and the drama troupe of Shanghai Xingzhi art school were merged into Shanghai Municipal Academy of drama. In November of the same year, the East China branch of the Central Academy of drama was formally established (no administrative affiliation with Beijing Central Academy of Drama). The business was directly led by the central Ministry of culture, and Xiong Fosi was still the president.
In August 1955, due to the increasing scale of the school, the original school site was not enough for use, so it was moved to Huashan Road

Shanghai Academy of drama
In December 1956, with the approval of the State Council, the University changed its name to Shanghai drama academy, which is subordinate to the Ministry of culture.
In May 1960, the University was designated as a key university under the Ministry of culture. By the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1962, the department setting of the Academy had developed into a complete system of four departments: performance, director, drama literature and stage art. During this period, the number of students increased from 248 in 1952 to 668 in 1965, and the number of teachers increased from 57 in the same period to 157. Among them, song Duanjun, Zhao Mingyi, Yu Shangyuan, sun Haoran, Wu Xiaobang, Hu Rongrong and other famous scholars all taught in the school after liberation.
At the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution" in 1966, the teaching work of Shanghai Academy of drama was interrupted for seven years, and the enrollment was resumed in 1973

In the mid-1970s, the school established the Department of fine arts. From the 1980s to the 1990s, film directing classes were held. In 1995, he started the major of art design, radio and television editing and directing. For the first time in China, he established the major of television hosting and the Department of television art.
In 1979, Shanghai Academy of drama began to recruit postgraduates.
In 1981, with the approval of the State Council, Shanghai Academy of drama became one of the first batch of institutions to set up master's degree in China. The first graduate students who graduated in that year became the first batch of graduates who obtained master's degree in drama in China.
On December 2, 1985, the bronze statue of Xiong Fosi was unveiled on the campus of Shanghai Drama Academy.
In 1992, the Ministry of culture decided to take the lead in implementing the comprehensive reform of the management system.
In 1994, the school won the title of national advanced cultural collective named by the Ministry of personnel and the Ministry of culture.
In 1996 and 2001, drama science was listed as the key discipline of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai municipal key discipline, and became the national key discipline in 2007

In 1999, the University began to recruit doctoral students.
In April 2000, Shanghai Academy of drama was transferred from the Ministry of culture to the Ministry of culture (now the Ministry of culture and Tourism) and Shanghai Municipality, with Shanghai Municipality as the main administration.
In June 2002, the former school of performing arts of Shanghai Normal University was incorporated into Shanghai Drama College as a branch of drama and dance. Shanghai Opera School and Shanghai Dance School became the affiliated opera school and Dance School of Shanghai Academy of drama.
In 2004, the University successively established the College of creativity and the College of continuing education. In August of the same year, Shanghai drama academy and Jing'an District People's government formally signed a contract to jointly run the school. The former Shanghai Peijin middle school was also renamed as the senior high school affiliated to Shanghai Drama Academy

In 2005, the school set up drama academy, dance academy and TV art academy on the basis of drama, dance and TV art and other related majors
