St. Sophia Church is a famous landmark building in Harbin. It was built in March 1907. It was originally the military Church of the Fourth Infantry Division in eastern Siberia of Russia. The site was rebuilt in September 1923 and completed on November 25, 1932. After the completion of St. Sophia Church, deeply influenced by Byzantine architectural style, is a typical representative of modern European architecture in Harbin, with high artistic value and historical value.
"Sophia" means "the wisdom of the gods", which is the name of the church. It means to worship the God of wisdom. The church adopts the architectural form of the combination of the centralized structure and the arched structure under the cover of the large dome. It well designs the plane of the church as the East-West Latin cross, and all the walls are made of fair faced red bricks. The main building in the center is crowned with a huge onion dome, and tents of different sizes are built on the four wings. "Onion dome" and "tent roof" are recognized as important symbols of Russian architecture. Therefore, this exquisite Byzantine building has taken on the cultural traditions, cultural customs and environmental characteristics of different regions in its development.
The plane layout of the church is Latin cross, with clear primary and secondary structure. The appearance is composed of a huge "onion head" dome, which commands four tent roofs of different sizes. With a height of 53.35 meters, covering an area of 721 square meters and a construction area of 960 square meters, the church is the largest Orthodox Church in the Far East. In 1986, St. Sophia Church was listed as class I protected building in Harbin. In November 1996, it was listed as a national key cultural relics protection unit. In 1997, Harbin municipal government carried out the protection, repair and comprehensive renovation of the St. Sophia Church Building and its surrounding environment, and reproduced its former style. In September of the same year, with the approval of Harbin municipal government, it was named Harbin Architectural Art Museum as an important window to publicize and display Harbin's history, culture and architectural art. The museum now displays the exhibition of old photos of Harbin, which vividly shows the development process of Harbin from a small fishing village to an international metropolis with the reputation of "Oriental Moscow" and "Oriental little Paris" with a large number of precious historical pictures, images and objects. The new synagogue was built in 1918, with a height of 23.59 meters, an area of 1296 square meters and a construction area of 2400 square meters. It is the largest Synagogue in China. "Gazing at architectural art exhibition" and "Jews in Harbin historical and cultural exhibition" are now on display in the hall.
In 2004, Harbin municipal government carried out the overall protection and restoration of the hall building, making it a new characteristic landscape of the city. The "gazing architectural art exhibition" held on the first floor of the New Synagogue focuses on the rich and colorful architectural art of Harbin and the outstanding achievements of urban construction through painting, photography, models, prints and other art forms. 2、 Harbin Jewish history and culture exhibition, held on the third floor, vividly shows Jewish culture with a large number of precious pictures, images and objects, and witnesses the friendship between China and Jewish countries.
