Manla reservoir is located in the upper reaches of the Nianchu River in Longma Township, Jiangzi County, Xigaze Prefecture, Tibet. It is a large-scale water conservancy project with comprehensive benefits of flood control and tourism, mainly for irrigation and power generation. The retaining dam is a clay core rockfill dam, 287 meters long, 76.3 meters high and 10 meters wide. It is known as "the first dam in Tibet". It is 28 kilometers away from the county seat and 113 kilometers away from Shigatse City. Manla project is a large (II) type project, which is the "leading" project on the Nianchu river. The dam site area is 4200 ~ 4300 meters high. It is very cold in winter, dry and lack of oxygen. The actual construction period of the whole year is only 7 ~ 8 months, and the construction conditions are difficult.

Geography
The drainage area above the dam site of Manla reservoir is 2757 square kilometers, with an average annual runoff of 483 million cubic meters and an average annual runoff of 15.3 cubic meters per second. The drainage area controlled by the project is 2757 square kilometers. The drainage area above the dam site is located on the plateau, with an altitude of 4200 ~ 7200m. The area with an elevation higher than 5000m accounts for 54.6% of the drainage area. Glaciers are well developed in the basin, covering an area of 130 square kilometers. There are many terminal moraines and lateral moraines in the upstream, and there are 49 terminal moraines in east-west direction near the source.
reservoir
The total design capacity of the reservoir is 157 million cubic meters, the normal water level is 4256 meters, the dead water level is 4235.0 meters, and the corresponding capacity is 132 million cubic meters. The regulated storage capacity is 83 million cubic meters and the dead storage capacity is 49 million cubic meters. The average annual discharge at the dam site is 15.1 m3 / s, the peak discharge with 100 year return period is 393 m3 / s, and the peak discharge with 2000 year return period is 644 m3 / s. The check flood standard is once every two thousand years plus 20% safety guarantee value, and the upstream glacier lake outburst flood is checked as an extraordinary flood standard.
dam
The dam is a clay core rockfill dam with a maximum height of 75.3m, a crest length of 287m, a plant size of 51.5 × 13.68 × 25.23m, four power stations with a total installed capacity of 20000 kW, a hydraulic turbine model hla562-lj-135, an installed capacity of 4 × 5000 kW, a guaranteed output of 365 000 kW and an annual generating capacity of 61 million KW · H. The project consists of clay core dam, spillway tunnel, diversion tunnel, surge shaft and ground powerhouse.
