Yalu River Bridge

--The Yalu River Bridge is one of the landmark scenic spots in Dandong. It is close to the Yalu River Bridge and is a relic of Japanese colonial rule.

Yalu River Bridge

Yalu River broken bridge is located at the Bank of Yalu River, Jiang'an Road, Zhenxing District, Dandong City, Liaoning Province, China. The Yalu River broken bridge is the first of many bridges on the Yalu River. It was started in May 1909 and completed in October 1911. It was built by the Railway Bureau of the Korean governor's office at that time. In 2006, it was approved by the State Council as the Sixth Batch of key cultural relics protection units in China, and it is also the only national protection unit in Dandong City. In December 2016, it was selected into the list of national red tourist attractions.

The Yalu River broken bridge was originally a 12 hole railway bridge with a total length of 944.2 meters and a width of 11 meters. It was originally built by the Railway Bureau of the Japanese Governor General's office in Korea in 1909. The fourth hole in the Chinese side was used as the open and close beam. With the fourth pier as the axis, it can rotate 90 degrees to facilitate the navigation of passing ships. The bridge is the first bridge on the Yalu River. In April 1943, Japan built the second railway bridge (today's Sino Korean friendship bridge) 100 meters upstream of the bridge, which was changed into a highway bridge.

During the puppet Manchukuo period, the Japanese built the second railway bridge (today's Sino Korean friendship bridge) upstream of the bridge in 1943.

It will be opened in April and the first bridge will be changed into a highway bridge one by one.

During the Korean War, the bridge, as the main traffic artery for China to support the Korean front, had a prominent strategic position. From November 8 to 14, 1950, the US military sent bombers to bomb the bridge for many times. The bridge was broken at the waist, the steel beam on the Korean side fell into the water, and three piers collapsed. The first bridge was destroyed.

The remnant bridge of four holes left by the Chinese side has been preserved to this day. It is used to be called "broken bridge", and it is a municipal cultural relic protection unit. In June 1993, construction was started to repair it, and it was turned into a tourist attraction, named "broken bridge of Yalu River".

The bridge is painted light blue to keep the war in mind and hope for peace.

After many proposals, the bridge name was restored to "Yalu River broken bridge", and the bridge body was restored to steel gray.

General Chi Haotian, Minister of national defense, inscribed the name of the bridge "Yalu River broken bridge" in order to preserve the original appearance of history.

The writer Chen Yunhe wrote his prose "history on the broken bridge of Yalu River" here, saying that "going to the broken bridge is like a lively patriotic education lesson, knowing shame, victory and world affairs, and following the Republic with a swagger.".
