Qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, formerly known as the macaque Provincial Nature Reserve in Dangan Island, Zhuhai, which was established with the approval of Guangdong Provincial People's Government in November 1989. In November 2004, the people's Government of Guangdong Province approved the merger of macaque Provincial Nature Reserve of Zhuhai Dangan island and mangrove municipal nature reserve of Zhuhai Qi'ao Island to establish "qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve of Zhuhai". Zhuhai qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve is one of the few comprehensive nature reserves integrating forest, wildlife and wetland ecosystems in China, with a total area of 7373.77 hectares. The main protected objects are mangrove wetlands, macaques, birds and sea island ecological environment, It is an important base for the study of wetland ecosystem, migratory birds and macaque habitat and development history.

Historical evolution

In November 1989, the people's Government of Guangdong Province approved the establishment of Dangan Island macaque provincial nature reserve. In June 1990, the management station of Macaque Nature Reserve in Dangan island of Zhuhai City was established and managed by the Municipal Greening Committee. In April 2000, Zhuhai Municipal People's Government approved the establishment of "Qi'ao mangrove reserve", which is managed by Qi'ao mangrove reserve. In February 2002, Qiao mangrove reserve was officially taken over by the Municipal Forestry Bureau, Dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve was taken over by the municipal Wildlife Protection and management station, and Lu Haiyang station was also in charge of the overall work. In November 2004, the people's Government of Guangdong Province approved the merger of Qi'ao Island Nature Reserve and Dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve to establish "qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve in Zhuhai".

In January 2006, the Management Office of qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve in Zhuhai was officially completed and operated independently.

Qi'ao Island Mangrove Nature Reserve is located in the northwest of Qi'ao Island, Zhuhai City, Guangdong Province. Its geographical location is between 113 ° 36 ′ 40 ″ - 113 ° 39 ′ 15 ″ E and 22 ° 23 ′ 40 ″ - 22 ° 27 ′ 38 ″ n. it borders daaowei, Dongyong, Xichong and shijingwan in the southeast and southwest, and faces Zhongshan, Shenzhen and Hong Kong across the sea in the northwest and northeast, with a total area of 5103.77 hectares.

Dangan Island Nature Reserve, located in the middle of the Pearl River Estuary, is 20km and 78km away from Hong Kong and Shenzhen in the north, 72km and 74km away from Macao and Zhuhai in the northwest. Its geographical location is 114 ° 07 ′ ~ 114 ° 19 ′ E and 21 ° 58 ′ ~ 22 ° 04 ′ n. Including Dangan island and Erzhou Island, the total area is 2270 hectares.

There are 695 species of vascular plants belonging to 470 genera and 165 families in Qi'ao Mangrove Reserve (556 species of wild plants belonging to 398 genera and 140 families, 139 species of cultivated plants belonging to 106 genera and 65 families). Among the wild vascular plants, 39 species belong to 28 genera of 19 families, 4 species belong to 3 genera of 3 families and 513 species belong to 367 genera of 118 families. Mangrove plants account for 83.3%, 86.7% and 55.6% of mangrove families, genera and species in China; semi mangrove plants account for 77.8%, 90% and 90% of mangrove families, genera and species in China; mangrove associated plants account for 73.3%, 71.4% and 68.2% of mangrove associated plants in China. There are 438 species (including 9 varieties) of vascular plants belonging to 320 genera and 123 families in Dangan Island macaque reserve. Among them, there are 22 species of pteridophytes, belonging to 18 genera and 17 families; 7 species of gymnosperms, belonging to 5 genera and 5 families; 342 species and 8 varieties of dicotyledons, belonging to 250 genera and 86 families; 58 species and 1 variety of monocotyledons, belonging to 47 genera and 15 families. There are three kinds of national key protected plants: Agaricus Aquilaria, echinacea and Cinnamomum cassia.

Qi'ao Island: there are 103 species of benthos, belonging to 5 classes, 14 orders and 48 families; 90 species of fish, belonging to 10 orders and 41 families; 154 species of terrestrial vertebrate wildlife (including 15 species of amphibians, 27 species of reptiles, 99 species of birds and 13 species of mammals) belonging to 25 orders and 58 families. There are 15 species of national key protected animals (rare and endangered animals), accounting for 12.8% of the total number of rare and endangered animals (117 species) in Guangdong Province, including 1 species of national first-class key protected animals and 14 species of second-class key protected animals. Dangan Island: there are 85 species of wild animals in the area, belonging to 34 families and 19 orders. Among them, there are 10 species of mammals, 60 species of birds, 10 species of reptiles and 5 species of amphibians. There are 1 species of boa constrictor, 9 species of macaque, pangolin, sparrow hawk, sparrow hawk, kite, brown winged cuckoo, long eared owl and tiger frog.

Qi'ao-dangan Island Provincial Nature Reserve in Zhuhai and Institute of tropical forestry, Chinese Academy of forestry, have recently won the national science and Technology Award for the project "application demonstration of mangrove wetland vegetation rapid restoration technology" and "experimental demonstration of South China coastal mangrove protection, restoration and reconstruction technology" jointly declared by the national science and Technology Ministry With the approval of the Ministry of forestry, the project will be fully launched in Qi'ao Island mangrove reserve.
