Yandai Xiejie is a commercial pedestrian street with traditional cultural characteristics. Starting from di'anmenwai street in the East, it is northeast and southwest. You can see "Yinding Guanshan", one of the eight famous scenic spots in Yanjing, from the southwest corner, with a total length of 232 meters. It is said that there used to be a cigarette shop in the north of Dongkou Road on Xiejie street. In front of the door, there was a large wooden cigarette bag as a cover. It was as tall as a person and as thick as a rice bowl. The golden cigarette pot was also tied with a red silk tassel. You can see it from a distance, which is very eye-catching. This street has been famous since then.
In fact, the street itself is like a cigarette bag. The slender street looks like a cigarette pole, the east entrance looks like a cigarette holder, and the west entrance turns to the south, leading to Yinding bridge, which looks like a cigarette pot. It is for these two reasons that the name of Xiejie after "cigarette bag" is worthy of the name.

Related Legends
In the northeast of Xicheng District, to the north of Di'anmen, in front of the drum tower, there is the oldest slanting street in Beijing, Yandai slanting street. It starts from di'anmenwai street in the East, ends at xiaoshibei Hutong in the west, and is connected with Yaer Hutong. It runs from northeast to southwest, with a total length of 232 meters.
According to the book "a study of the past and the future" published during the reign of Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, the street was originally named "Gulou Xiejie", but was renamed "Yandai Xiejie" in the late Qing Dynasty.
Yandaixie street is located in the core area of Shichahai historical and cultural reserve, starting from Di'anmen street in the East and adjacent to Shichahai Qianhai in the west, with a total length of nearly 300 meters. It is listed as one of the eight characteristic commercial streets to be built in 2007.
It is said that most of the bannermen who lived in Beicheng at that time liked to smoke dry tobacco or water tobacco, and the tobacco leaves were packed in cigarette bags. Due to the increasing demand for cigarette bags, cigarette bag shops have been opened one by one on the street. Most of the cigarette shops in this street are high steps with a large wooden cigarette bag in front of the door as a cover. Black cigarette pole, gold cigarette pot, such a sign is very vivid. There is a "shuangshengtai" cigarette shop in the north of Dongkou Road on Yandai Xiejie street. In front of the door, there are large wooden cigarette bags as tall as one person. They are as thick as rice bowls. The golden cigarette pot is also tied with red silk, which is very eye-catching. This "shuangshengtai" cigarette bag is really the number one cigarette bag in the same industry in Beijing.
In addition, the smoky Street itself is like a smoky bag.
The more the name of Yandai Xiejie is called, the louder it is. It has been circulating all the time.
developing process
It is about 40 meters into the east entrance of Yandai Xiejie street, and the foundations on both sides are 1.4 meters above the ground, so the shops in the east entrance are all high steps. In the northwest of Xiejie, that is, the south entrance of dashibei Hutong, the house foundation is gradually 0.5 meters higher than the road surface, and the road surface forms a slow slope from the south side of the middle of Xiejie to the edge of Yiliu River, which indicates that the formation of Yandai Xiejie is related to the changes of Shichahai river bank. During the construction of Di'anmen department store in the 1960s, the stone revetment remains of Haizi in Yuan Dynasty were found. It can be seen that its base site was the Northeast Bank of Haizi in Yuan Dynasty. Therefore, Yandai Xiejie was once covered by the water surface of Haizi in history. Due to long-term siltation and accumulation in the past dynasties, lime soil, garbage and filling construction, residential buildings and new streets were gradually formed. Because it is gradually developed along the coast of Haizi, making the street trend to form an inclined street, which is different from the chessboard style streets originally planned in the metropolis. In the south, there is "Baimi Xiejie", which was gradually formed after sedimentation on the southeast Bank of Haizi in the Yuan Dynasty. As far as I can see, the ground of Yandai Xiejie was formed in the early Ming Dynasty, and it was a scenic spot on the northeast shore of Qianhai in Shichahai at that time.

Oblique street and water transport
The form of Xiejie was directly related to the transportation of grain goods in Huihe River in Yuan Dynasty, so the prosperity of Yandai Xiejie originated from Gulou West Street. Kublai Khan, the emperor of the Yuan Dynasty, built Dadu with the layout of "before Dynasty and after market", that is, from Yongdingmen to the three main halls is the dynasty, and behind the bell and Drum Tower is the market. Moreover, due to the excavation of a 360 mile "Tonghui River", which connects the north and South Grand Canal, the southern freighters directly come to Dadu, and all kinds of goods are continuously supplied to Dadu market.
After the completion of Tonghui River, Jishuitan has become a port. Rice, tea and other sources, nearby ships, inns. In order to provide a passage between the wharf and the drum tower, the inclined street was built between Jishuitan and the drum tower. In terms of layout, the construction of Yuandadu is a pioneering work in the history of world architecture. The city is rectangular. There are nine main lines in the East, West, North and south of the city, and the streets are wide, straight and neat. But the main line from Deshengmen to Gulou is inclined. However, from a practical point of view, this street was very affordable, which solved the urgent need of transportation and shortened the distance. Therefore, it was not only the only earliest street in Beijing, but also the lifeline of transportation and trade in this area at that time.
After the Ming Dynasty, the city center moved southward, and the Tonghui river channel began to be silted up, so the grain transport ships could not enter the Jishuitan. Although the Ming and Qing Dynasties were dredged for many times due to the need of water transport, they did not return to their original appearance. However, Xieshi street, Gulou West Street, including Yandai Xiejie street, basically maintains the pattern and appearance of more than 600 years ago.
Reasons for prosperity
Gulou West Street and Yandai Xiejie street were called Xiejie markets in Yuan Dynasty. Their prosperity depended on two aspects: first, the Jishuitan, which is two miles wide from east to west, was used to transport goods from north to South; second, the description of "covering the sky" in biography of Guo Shoujing in the history of Yuan Dynasty shows the prosperity of that year. The second is the drum tower, which was built in 1272 A.D. from the Yuan Dynasty to the ninth year of the Yuan Dynasty. At that time, it was called "qizhenglou" and was close to the pier of Houhai backdoor bridge in Shichahai. It was also a commercial area set up in the Yuan Dynasty according to the book of rites, that is, the palace of Dadu was in the south of the city and the business district of Zhonggulou was in the north of the city. The local chronicle of Yuan Dynasty "Xijin Zhi" says: "qizhenglou is the beautiful qiaoye of the capital city" and "this building is in the middle of the capital city". If we restore the plan of Dadu of Yuan Dynasty, we can see that the drum tower and the bell tower in the north are indeed the center of the city. Therefore, Xijin Zhi called it the place of "wealth and wealth are not prosperous here" in Dadu of Yuan Dynasty, the drum tower "the southeast corner markets are all shops", and the west area of the tower "lead duogetai tavern, and hope Lake Pavilion, which used to be the place of expensive officials to visit." Around the building, there are fruit trees, cake noodles, firewood charcoal and utensils
At the beginning of the Ming Dynasty, when Beijing was the capital of the Ming Dynasty, Emperor Chengzu of the Ming Dynasty imitated the practice of successive dynasties and moved to the south to maintain stability. Due to the quiet scenery of Jishuitan, the rich and noble built villas along the coast one after another. As a result, on the inclined Street connecting Jishuitan and di'anmenwai business district, not only the southern end of the inclined market was maintained
