Historical evolution
In 1953, Central South Institute of physical education was established in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province.
In 1955, the school moved to Wuhan, Hubei Province.
In 1956, the school changed its name to Wuhan Institute of physical education, which is directly under the State General Administration of sports.
In 2001, the school was transformed into a school jointly built by the State General Administration of sports and the people's Government of Hubei Province.
In 2006, the University was added as a doctoral degree awarding unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council.
In 2010, the University obtained the qualification of recommending excellent fresh undergraduate graduates to study for master's degree without examination; in the same year, the University obtained the right to confer the first level discipline doctoral degree of physical education.
In 2012, the school was approved as a mobile station for postdoctoral research in physical education.
On February 22, 2017, Wuhan Institute of physical education signed a cooperation agreement with Wufeng Tujia Autonomous County to build the first mountain sports training base in Hubei Province
On September 29, Sanhe International Tennis college, the first tennis college in Hubei Province, was officially established in Wuhan Institute of physical education.
On September 27, 2018, China Triathlon Association and Wuhan Institute of Physical Education jointly built China Triathlon College; in the same year, the college was selected into the first batch of "double first-class" construction universities in Hubei Province.

As of December 2019, Wuhan Institute of physical education has established contacts with more than 100 universities, physical education research institutions and world sports organizations in 37 countries (regions) to exchange and cooperate in personnel training, academic exchanges, scientific research and competitive sports. It has established China Karate Association Training College, China Triathlon college, Asian gymnastics training center and the international gymnastics college authorized by the International Gymnastics Federation; it has jointly run school projects with Chinese foreign schools, 7 international cooperation projects, and nearly 500 students.
