In its heyday, it reached more than 3000 rooms, occupying most of the old Yellow City, but judging from the only 243 rooms left now, it is also quite luxurious. It can be compared with the Royal Palace of the capital. It is a typical representative of Jiaodong quadrangle architecture. It can be called the essence of Qing Dynasty's architectural art. It has a history of more than 200 years. After visiting Ding's former residence, Qian Weichang, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese people's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), wrote ten words "national treasures of architectural art in Ming and Qing Dynasties" with deep emotion.
Each courtyard of the existing Ding's former residence is composed of five courtyard, which is arranged and expanded symmetrically on the central axis, giving people a sense of solemnity and stability. The stone drums on both sides of the gate are called mendang, and the four door hairpins above the door frame are called hudui. The symmetrical dragon head on the roof is called Zhengwen, which has the power of guarding against evil. The ridge decoration between the dragon heads is commonly known as "fudanzi", which means that the family's grain warehouse is full and has exceeded the roof. The lantern hanging above the doorway is called hall light, on which the hall number of the owner of the house is written.
