Fang's lamp house

Fang's lamp house was built in 1920. It was jointly built by the Fang's family in zhaiqun (ancient house) and Qiangya village. It was originally named "guxilou". It was named after the place name of the ancient house where Fang's family lived and the stream that used to flow by the house. The building is 18.43 meters high with five floors. Below the third floor is the accommodation for the personnel on duty. On the fourth floor is the open gallery with a cantilevered platform. On the fifth floor is the western style dome Pavilion. The building is equipped with early Western generators, searchlights, guns and so on. It is a typical watchtower. In history, Fang's Denglou played an active role in early warning and defense against bandit attacks in Magang area in the north.

Fang's lamp house is located on a hillside to the north of Tangkou market, Tangkou Town, Kaiping City, 11 kilometers east of Kaiping City. In the ninth year of the Republic of China (1920 A.D.), it was built by the Fang's family in Jinzhai group and Qiangya village. It was originally named "Guxi Lou". It was named after the place where the Fang's family lived and the stream that used to flow by the building.

Diaolou shape

Fang's Lantern tower, like a powerful guard, stands on the third mountain to the north of tangkouxu. It was built in 1920, for the ancient house (Homestead) villagers and overseas Chinese raised funds to build. The building is a reinforced concrete structure, five stories high, three stories high, the fourth floor is a colonnade structure, four overhanging, the fifth floor is a pavilion, the top like a round pot inverted cover.

The main purpose of the Diaolou is to defend the bandits in the area of tugang, Magang. Because in the 1920s and 1930s, Magang Tutang was a famous bandit's den. Bandits burned, killed and looted everywhere, and committed all kinds of crimes. Therefore, villagers in Guzhai village joined hands in joint defense. After careful investigation, the villagers chose the third mountain with higher terrain as an important base for joint defense. Here, the hills are high and steep. You can look around and defend easily. However, there are few trees and the target is easy to be exposed, so many villagers suggest building a strong watchtower on the mountain. However, building needs a lot of money. What should we do? After discussion, it was decided to solve the problem by raising funds from villagers and overseas Chinese. Due to the rapid arrival of funds and the quick action of villagers, the construction of the building started in February 1920. A five storey watchtower of reinforced concrete structure was completed in only eight months.

After the completion of the Diaolou, there were more than ten regimental guards stationed in the building for a long time. They were equipped with more advanced firearms at that time, including 79 guns, "Mauser" guns and two horse guns purchased from the United States. Later, a generator was installed on the first floor, and a searchlight was installed on the top of the building, all of which were imported from Germany. Because most of the fund raisers are Fang's surname, and there are searchlights on the upper floor, the watchtower is called Fang's lamp tower. The local people vividly said that the searchlight was "sharp". When the light came to Shuikou, the people in Shuikou could read books and newspapers, and the chickens nearby fainted. If bandits come to rob, the guards will turn on the searchlights to illuminate the bandits, and then use gongs or guns to inform the nearby villagers to be vigilant or take counterattack actions.

The regiment defense team is responsible for guarding the crops in the field. They have a very harmonious relationship with the villagers, and the villagers often send some food to them, such as rice, sweet potatoes, soybeans and so on.

The story of catching a thief

Suddenly, the sentry team members found that there were five or six shadows moving slowly at the foot of the mountain in the north. The player immediately signaled his companion to turn on the searchlight. Ah, they were wearing hats on their heads, and they seemed to be carrying heavy things on their shoulders. They walked towards the tangkouwei with deep feet and shallow feet, and looked back from time to time. "Are they the gang of dog thieves in Tutang again? "The alert team immediately ordered them to stop, and then several people rushed down with weapons. However, under the strong light, the group still walked their own way as if nothing had happened.

So they secretly cut rice in the fourth nine of Tangkou, covered their guns, dressed up as farmers, and tried to hide the truth from the world. But they were still planted under the hands of the vigilant regiment guards. Later, the team severely punished the bandits and returned the rice to the stolen farmers.

After that, the bandits no longer dare to act rashly. Fang's lamp house has been playing a huge role in ensuring the safety of the villagers in the area of residential buildings.
