Why did Huineng, the sixth patriarch, take refuge in Sihui, the beginning of Lingnan Buddhism? It is said that Huineng joined Hongren, the fifth patriarch of Dongshan Temple (now Wuzu Temple) in Huangmei County, Hubei Province. After being appreciated by Hongren for his work, Hongren passed on Zen and gave it to Yibo Meng, becoming Huineng, the sixth patriarch of Zen. Shenxiu, the eldest disciple of Hongren, was very unconvinced because he couldn't get his master to pay for it. So he gathered a group of disciples to harm Huineng and take back his mantle. When Hongren saw that someone wanted to harm Huineng, he went to work He told him to go south as soon as possible. Before he left, he said to him, "when you meet Huai, you will stop, when you meet Hui, you will hide.". Huineng hurried south with his coat and bowl. Shenxiu sent people to follow him until Shaozhou (now Shaoguan City), and some people chased him. When Huineng returned to Guangdong, he thought of his master's instructions. In order to avoid the enemy, he went to Sihui. When he came to longtoupuzi forest, he saw that the mountain was high and the forest was lush, the terrain was remote, and the scenery was pleasant. The villagers made a living by farming and hunting. He thought that the best place to avoid the enemy's pursuit was to kill animals and live in the mountain forest. So he found a hunter named Ye At that time, Huineng was still a young man in his twenties.
Huineng, after many years of refuge and hiding experience, personally approached the lower class villagers, which had a great influence on his later religious philosophy. For example, he advocated "peace of mind, no labor, no use practicing Zen". It means that you don't have to recite Buddhist scriptures and practice all the time. As long as you put down the butcher's knife, you can become a Buddha on the spot. Huineng, the sixth patriarch, also believed that "the next generation has the highest wisdom.". His Buddhist theories all have the unique views of China's own religious philosophy.
It is said that in Sihui, the story of Huineng, the sixth patriarch, enlightening Ruan Ziyu, the sage Buddha of Ruan, and Ruan Ziyu enlightening Liang zeneng, the sage Buddha of Liang, has been spreading all the time. There are also Baolin temple and Baosheng temple built in the Tang Dynasty to offer sacrifices to the Buddha of Liang Gong and Ruan Gong.
