Textile City Art District
In February 2007, 11 Xi'an artists entered the Textile City, becoming the first group of residents of the ancient city's art district. At that time, Beijing 798 had become a fashionable tourist attraction. The "successful" experience of Beijing's old factory has become a reference for artists in Northwest China. For the Post-70s and post-80s artists who grew up in Xi'an, the history of Beijing Artists being driven to Dongcun and Yuanmingyuan in the 1990s is more like a legend smeared with gray halo. In the vigorous art trend of the eighth five year plan, there are not many Xi'an artists.

The artists in Xi'an Textile City face the fear of demolishing or not demolishing the factory buildings; the difference is that they have not experienced displacement. Only four months, the factory rent out. Under the background of high-profile support for creative industrial parks in Beijing, Shanghai and other places, the mayor of Xi'an issued the same slogan of "revitalization" after his "Weifu private visit" to the Textile City, so that the textile city was preserved and the bus lines were built. In the face of the change, the factory director was stunned. At the same time, he quickly increased the rent from 5.5 yuan per square meter per month to 11 yuan per square meter - although the price can only afford one day's rent at 798.
History of Textile City Art District
The decline of Textile City Art District
From the beginning of 2007 to the end of 2009, Yue Luping, a teacher of Xi'an Academy of fine arts, has been an active curator in Xi'an Textile City Art District. Now, he has alienated the textile city and chose Songzhuang, which is far away from Tongzhou, Beijing. If in the first few months of the second half of 2009, he was still between Songzhuang in Beijing and Xi'an, in the past one or two months, he spent all his body and mind on planning Beijing At the art exhibition of Songzhuang. The most representative curator of the textile city "drifts to the north". Although Yue Luping once said in an interview with our reporter that going to Songzhuang is to open the way for the Textile City, in the future it will be a new operation mode of "front shop and back factory" to develop Xi'an contemporary art. But for the Textile City, a local art area, this is undoubtedly a huge loss. An artist who has left the textile city told reporters that after Yue Luping gradually faded out of the textile city in the second half of 2009, there were fewer and fewer exhibitions here.
Opening of Textile City Art District
On November 3, 2007, the Art District of Xi'an textile city was officially opened to the outside world. An open day was set up in the art district for the public to visit the artists' studio. Yue Luping, a teacher of Xi'an Academy of fine arts, once visited the creative industry in Britain as an artist. As a promoter who devoted himself to the establishment of the Textile City Art District at the beginning, he thinks that we should reflect on "the relationship between the Textile City Art Workshop and the transformation of the western popular industrial district into an art district, as well as the relationship with Beijing 798". In other words, the Textile City Art Workshop wants to take a different road from Beijing 798.
To establish a local development model in Xi'an, curator Yue Luping, who is also the art director of Xi'an Modern Art Center, calls it "Nanniwan model". Not long ago, Xi'an Modern Art Center cooperated with Columbia University to make a full and accurate Research Report on the positioning and development of the Textile City Art Workshop. It is envisaged to build this place into a platform for contemporary art exchange and Exhibition: curation, resource integration, active promotion and frequent exchanges, so as to expand its influence.

Nearly 30000 square meters of factory buildings in the Textile City Art District (Banpo International Art District) are divided into ABC three districts, all of which are rented out. One third of them are professional artists. Most of them, like Sudan and Xi Hongzhe, just graduated, rely on family support and do odd jobs for a living, hoping for success in the future. Most of the others have jobs as designers, commercial photographers, or museums. Contemporary art is only their semi professional hobby.
The artists in Xi'an have the tradition of Chang'an painting school, and live in a city with profound accumulation. The traditional college education artists should have a relationship with the ancient civilization, while the young people living in the network world are actively separating themselves from the city. "Their feeling is that they just live in Xi'an by chance. This is very similar to the small communities in the Qinling Mountains of Xi'an corresponding to the textile city. Some middle-aged artists in Xi'an built houses in Qinling Mountains to live peacefully and stay aloof from the world. Many of their children are engaged in art, so they set up studios in the textile city to actively participate in the exhibition in Beijing and pursue success.
