Moon Bay

There are two places in Mingyue Bay. One is the first bay of the Three Gorges. Second, it refers to the mingyuewan scenic spot in the west mountain of Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. It is said that Fu Chai, the king of Wu, and Xi Shi, the princess of love, are here to watch the moon, which makes mingyuewan ancient village famous.

In April 2020, mingyuewan, Shigong village, Jinting Town, Wuzhong District, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province, was selected as one of the first batch of traditional villages in Jiangsu Province.

It is said that in the spring and Autumn period more than 2500 years ago, Fu Chai, the king of Wu, and Xi Shi, a beautiful woman, once enjoyed the bright moon here, hence the name of the ancient village.

The west mountain of Dongting is located in the middle of Taihu Lake. In the spring and Autumn period, Wu and Yue fought against each other. The west mountain was the front position of Wu state, leaving many legends and relics about the king of Wu. It left a great space for the king of Wu and Xi Shi to enjoy the moon in Mingyue Bay.

Mingyuewan ancient village is located at the southern end of Xishan island in Taihu Lake. It is now Shigong administrative village of Xishan town and damingwan natural village 1.5km west of Shigong mountain. Mingyue Bay is famous for its beautiful environment and rich historical and cultural heritages

In the Tang Dynasty, mingyuewan was well-known. Great poets such as Bai Juyi, PI Rixiu, Lu guimeng and Liu Changqing all came here and left poems praising mingyuewan. In the Southern Song Dynasty, the Jin soldiers invaded the south, and a large number of high-ranking officials and nobles went to live in seclusion in Xishan and settle down in mingyuewan, such as Deng Su, an admonishing official who was famous for writing poems against the song Huizong's large-scale running of huashigang, and Wu Yao, the son of Wu Yao, a famous anti Jin general. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, a large number of people from mingyuewan joined the Dongting business Gang, which was known as "diamond in the sky and Dongting", and became rich by going out to do business. During the reign of Qianlong and Jiaqing in the Qing Dynasty (about 250 years ago), mingyuewan reached its peak, with a large number of exquisite houses, ancestral halls, shibanjie, Hebu, docks and other public buildings built. These houses and ancestral halls have exquisite and elegant brick, wood and stone carvings, and the buildings are full of local characteristics.

The existing ancient village in mingyuewan covers an area of about 9 hectares, with more than 100 permanent residents and nearly 400 people. Most of them are farmers who live by planting flowers and fruits, Biluochun tea, fishing and breeding in Taihu Lake. Most of them have surnames of Deng, Qin, Huang and Wu. Most of them are descendants of retired nobles in the Southern Song Dynasty. Mingyue Bay is surrounded by mountains and lakes, surrounded by mountains on three sides. It is green and green all the year round. It is hidden in the deep, and has a deep artistic conception of Peach Blossom Land. There are two East-West main streets in the village, North and south. There are many horizontal lanes between the two streets, which are crisscross and orderly, commonly known as Qipan street. The streets are paved with granite strips and ditches. There is a folk saying of "mingwan stone street, wear embroidered shoes after rain". There are many Ming and Qing buildings on both sides of the street, which are scattered and mottled. In front of and behind the house, four seasons flowers and fruits are planted. Shen Deqian, a poet of the Qing Dynasty, called it "human smoke, chickens and dogs in the flower forest". Ling Ruhuan, a poet of the Qing Dynasty, called it "water embraces green mountains, mountains embrace flowers, and there are people in the depths of flowers."
