On January 8, 2020, the Ministry of culture and tourism of the people's Republic of China announced that 22 scenic spots including Zhaoqing Xinghu scenic spot were rated as national 5A scenic spots. This is the first 5A scenic spot in Zhaoqing and the 14th 5A scenic spot in Guangdong Province.

As one of the first batch of national key scenic spots, Xinghu scenic spot covers a total area of 19.527 square kilometers, which is composed of Qixingyan and Dinghushan. Among them, Qixingyan area covers a total area of 8.227 square kilometers, belonging to karst landform. With peak forests, caves, lakes, inscriptions and Taoist temples as the main landscapes, it is known as "fairyland on earth" and "the first wonder of Lingnan".

Dinghushan area, covering an area of 11.3 square kilometers, is a primary secondary forest with rich vegetation, with forests and waterfalls as the main landscape features. It is China's first nature reserve and UNESCO's "man and biosphere" positioning research station, known as the "Green Island on the Tropic of cancer".
