Seaman's Pavilion
Seaman's Pavilion is located in the east of hailou, xiaopanlonggang Town, Yuexiu mountain, Guangzhou city. It was built to commemorate the general strike of seafarers in Hong Kong.
From the road, there are three granite archways with four pillars. The width of the archway is 6.21 meters and the height is about 5 meters. Up the stone steps is the seaman's pavilion. The pavilion stands on a square platform, more than 6 meters high, with 8 stone and rice columns, double eaves and octagonal spires, green glazed tiles, and the ground is inlaid with the emblem of Chinese Seamen's Federation of industry.
On January 12, 1922, under the leadership of Su Zhaozheng and Lin Weimin, the Chinese Seamen's Industry Federation of Hong Kong, in order to resist the oppression and exploitation of British capitalists in Hong Kong, demanded to increase wages and held a general strike. More than 10000 striking workers resolutely returned to Guangzhou and set up a general strike office in xihaokou. With the support of people from all walks of life, seafarers won after 56 days of struggle.
During the strike, seamen built a Seamen's strike road in Yuexiu mountain (from the front of Zhenhai building to the foot of Guangzhou Art Museum to connect with Jixiang Road), and planned to build a memorial Pavilion on the hillside beside the road, but failed due to lack of funds. In 1931, Liang Guoying, Huang Yucheng, Luo Guisheng and Xian Lu, members of the Guangdong Seamen's branch, initiated fund-raising activities. In 1933, the Seamen's pavilion was finally built.
In 1983, Guangzhou Municipal People's government declared it a cultural relic protection unit.
