brief introduction
Bassians' cemetery is located in Mount bass, Changzhou, Huangpu. It is one of the oldest religious sites in the world - Zoroastrians' cemetery.
Zoroastrianism
Zoroastrianism was popular in Persia (today's Iran and other places) and Central Asia (today's Afghanistan and other places) in ancient times. There were still a few believers in parts of Iran and Mumbai, India.
present situation
There are 8 adult tombs in the cemetery, all of which have been destroyed. According to the burial sequence, they are arranged from west to East. The spacing between the tombs is 2-3 meters, and the size of the tombs is slightly different. According to the mark of tombstone, the earliest one was buried in the 27th year of Daoguang (1847), and the latest one was buried in the second year of Xianfeng (1852). The ground part of each tomb is made of granite bricks into Arabian sarcophagus. Both the sarcophagus and the top of the sarcophagus were carved on the surface of the coping stone with granite inscriptions. The size and shape of each tomb were roughly the same. The inscription contains the name, religious belief and date of death of the deceased. One tablet records that the deceased was a Persian merchant engaged in international trade in English and ancient Latin. There are also two tombs of girls, newborn babies and stillborn fetuses in 1918. The ground part of the tombs is the same as that of adults, but smaller than that of adults. There are three small tombstones in English to prove the identity of the dead and the date of burial, indicating that Zoroastrians were still engaged in trade activities in Guangzhou around 1918. The cemetery group of bath believers covers an area of 100 square meters. On both sides of the boundary, there are 1 "west boundary stele" and 1 "east boundary stele" (the east boundary stele has been destroyed). On the north side, there are 2 boundary steles of bath tomb and the boundary stele of "Panyu county main hall boundary". It shows that the cemetery was designated by the local government of Qing Dynasty and approved as a special cemetery for the bassians living in Guangzhou. Guangzhou is one of the earliest trading ports open to the outside world in China. After the Opium War, envoys and businessmen from all over the world came to China in droves, forming a climax of coming to China. Mumbai, the main residence of Zoroastrians, is the concentration of cotton production and export in India, and also one of the main sources of raw materials for cotton textile industry in Guangzhou. Obviously, they are businessmen who have been doing business here for a long time.
