Hubei Provincial Library

Located in Gongyi Road, Wuchang District, Wuhan City, Hubei Provincial Library lake is the earliest provincial public library established and opened to the outside world in modern Chinese history. It is a national "first-class library". It was selected as one of the first batch of national key protection units of ancient books in 2008.

Hubei Provincial Library was founded in August 1904, renamed "Hubei Provincial Library" in 1946, renamed "Central South library" in 1951, named "Hubei Provincial Library" in 1954, and officially opened to the public in December 2012.

As of December 2016, the total construction area of Hubei Provincial Library is 103300 square meters, with 5293 reading seats, 17 departments and 286 employees. The total collection of the library is more than 7.61 million volumes (pieces), including 460000 ancient books and 880tb digital resources.

Historical evolution

In August 1904, Hubei Provincial Library was opened.

In 1936, the Anti Japanese war broke out, and the library moved to Enshi.

In 1946, he moved back to Wuchang and changed his name to "Hubei Provincial Library".

After 1949, it was renamed "Hubei Provincial People's Library".

In 1951, under the leadership of the Ministry of culture, it was renamed "Central South library".

In 1954, it was named "Hubei Provincial Library".

In 1958, a new library was built.

In May 2007, the construction project of the new library of Hubei Province was officially approved. The new library is located in the south of Shahu, Wuchang District, Wuhan city.

In October 2008, the foundation of the new museum project was laid.

In November 2012, the construction project of Hubei Provincial Library was completed.

In December 2012, the new Hubei Provincial Library was officially opened to the public.

On June 14, 2020, according to the unified deployment of the epidemic prevention and control headquarters of Hubei Province, five provincial public cultural venues, including the Hubei Provincial Library, will be reopened, and the public can visit them in an orderly manner by appointment.

Chinese newspapers and periodicals

According to the website of Hubei Provincial People's Government in November 2018, Hubei Provincial Library has collected nearly 11000 kinds of Chinese newspapers and periodicals since 1949. The library orders more than 4000 kinds of newspapers and periodicals every year, including about 300 kinds of newspapers, 3000 kinds of magazines, and 90% of core periodicals; there are nearly 20 kinds of overseas newspapers, such as Macao Daily, Wen Wei Po, Ta Kung Pao, etc., as well as Hong Kong and Taiwan newspapers; the National People's Congress copies of newspapers and periodicals is a complete range of reference materials for China's domestic social sciences and humanities; there are also the Chinese Journal dictionary and the National Journal dictionary Index of newspapers and periodicals and other reference books.
