Grandma Keng Village

Grandma Keng Village is located 42 kilometers southwest of Xinchang County, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. It is located at the source of chengtan River and at the junction of Dongyang, Shengzhou and Pan'an. There are 158 households in the village, with a total population of 520, 21 party members and 8 cadres of the two committees. In the past, grandma's pit was very poor. There was a common saying in the village: there was a grandma's pit in Xinchang. Some girls didn't marry in this pit. They ate six kinds of rice soup for three meals. They worked with cattle and ploughed. They were short of money and food.

In December 2018, the Ministry of housing and urban rural development plans to list waipokeng village in the fifth batch of Chinese traditional villages.

On June 6, 2019, it will be included in the list of the fifth batch of Chinese traditional villages.

In September 2019, it was awarded the title of national model collective of national unity and progress.

On December 31, 2019, it will be included in the second batch of National Forest Village list.

In June 2020, it will be selected into the recommended list of the second batch of national key Rural Tourism Villages in Zhejiang Province.

Village history

The village has a rich history of more than 350 years.

On October 25 and late November 1935, the first division of the first column of the division of the Chinese workers' and peasants' Red Army entered Xinchang twice, leaving footprints in 13 places, such as Li Lian Shi, Tan Jiao and grandma Keng.

In 1980, the Party branch of waipokeng village, together with the party branches of several surrounding villages, decided to organize and mobilize the masses to build roads leading to the outside of the mountain, so as to realize the goal of connecting every village with roads. In particular, waipokeng village should realize the "breakthrough" of the mountains.

In 1988, there were only 27 mu of arable land for more than 400 people in waipokeng village, and "the land is not three feet flat, and the people are not three cents silver". For nine months in a year, they lived on government relief food.

Since 1991, grandma Keng Village began to organize tea farmers to participate in the technical training of famous tea stir frying, and introduced and updated improved varieties of tea year by year. On November 15, Shen Zulun, then governor of Zhejiang Province, went to grandma Keng Village for investigation and found out that the village was building roads and was worried about lack of funds, so he immediately realized the fund of 50000 yuan for road construction.

On January 25, 1992, a 1.4km long tractor road was built in grandma Keng Village.

In 2002, waipokeng village established the development idea of "enriching the people by industry and prospering the village by tourism". Through the economic development mode of "cooperatives + farmers", the village organized farmers to establish the first organic tea cooperative in Xinchang County. The tea base passed the organic product certification, and registered its own brand "waipokeng" dafolongjing.

Since 2003, the organic tea planting technology has been promoted in waipokeng village, and the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides in tea gardens has been prohibited.

In 2005, waipokeng village established a standardized demonstration site of famous tea stir frying, which further popularized and improved the famous tea stir frying technology.

In September 2007, all the 1500 mu tea plantations in grandma Keng Village passed the organic product certification. By increasing the scientific and technological content of tea planting and frying, the quality and added value of tea were improved.

In 2010, waipokeng village applied to the Organizing Committee of Shanghai World Expo for the demonstration site of Shanghai World Expo experience tour, which was approved, and started the brand of waipokeng ethnic minority tourism at home and abroad.

In 2011, waipokeng village mainly promoted the construction of six venues, including ancient village roots, folk custom Expo, red footprint, green entrepreneurship, national harmony, precious memory, and the facilities in the museum.

The reconstruction of waipokeng village cultural hall was completed in 2013. It is an effective integration and utilization of resources based on the original facilities. It is composed of two halls, six corridors and three halls, namely auditorium, school hall, five corridors, red corridor, folk style hall, ethnic customs hall and exhibition hall. It is a spiritual and cultural home to meet the spiritual and cultural needs of villagers and spread, and also a spiritual paradise for tourists. In 2016, a new family training hall and 10 micro stories were added in waipokeng village to better display the traditional culture and history of waipokeng village.
