Synopsis
Richard O'Barry is probably the world's top dolphin domestication expert. He said that he spent 10 years in dolphin training, but he resolutely spent 35 years to destroy it. He made more people like dolphins, a lovely and intelligent creature, but the huge benefits also brought up more slaughter of this creature.
In Wakayama Prefecture, the southernmost part of Honshu Island, Japan, there is a small town called Taiji Town, which faces the Pacific Ocean and has three cliffs. There are about 3600 residents living in a town of 5.96 square kilometers, about one third of whom are engaged in fishing. On the surface, the town boasts its love for cetaceans everywhere: a smiling whale model is set up in the center of the town, the ferry is painted in the shape of a dolphin, the stone slab on the ground is printed with the image of a human dolphin, and there are temples dedicated to whale spirits in the town It's packaged like a theme park. However, behind it, there is a hidden opportunity to kill.
In the Edo era in the early 17th century, fishermen in Taiji town invented the spear whaling method, and Taiji town became the birthplace of traditional Japanese whaling method. In modern society, whaling is an important source of income for local residents. In 1986, the International Whaling Commission (IWC) issued a ban on commercial whaling, but a year later, the "limited whaling" for "research purposes" still exists, and the number of dolphins and minnows killed in Japan has tripled. Every year, an average of 23000 dolphins are "legally" encircled and killed by Japan. Just in the small Taiji Town, we have to "deal with" more than 1500 dolphins.
There are about 80 aquariums in Japan, and nearly half of them keep whales. Captured dolphins usually die within two years. The unsuccessful dolphin has become a dish for the public. 5000 tons of dolphin meat appeared in the Japanese market, but most ordinary citizens would never think that they had eaten dolphin meat because the package said whale meat.
The photography team was completely shocked by the pictures. After the massacre started, the blue-green water turned into a dazzling red. Watching the children and parents being slaughtered with their own eyes, the cries of the dolphins changed from existence to non existence, leaving only the jokes of Japanese fishermen, and the bodies of the dolphins floating in the water.

Richard O'Barry
Richard O'Barry is the originator and storyteller of the film. Throughout the 1960s, Richard O'Barry was synonymous with dolphin training and dolphin performance. The dolphin show he founded enabled a whole generation of American children to answer "marine biologists" without hesitation when asked "what they want to do when they grow up". But for the rest of Richard O'Barry's life, the only thing he wants to do and has been doing is to liberate the dolphins. He has been arrested all over the world for infringing on other people's private property - dolphins.

Behind the scenes
The whale Museum in taimachi is the "distribution center" for dolphins and whales in aquariums of many countries in the world. Among the whales and dolphins caught, only a small number of graceful, intelligent and well-developed individuals can be sent to the aquarium. The rest will suffer a tragic fate.
Relevant data show that every year the Japanese kill 23000 dolphins for food. But data from Japan's Ministry of agriculture shows that only 13 080 cetaceans were killed in 2007 - including dolphins and whales of all species.
Dolphins are not fish, they are mammals.
The film's director, Louis pishaws, was a photographer for National Geographic. This film is his first director's work.
Rick O'Barry, the central character of the film, was the most authoritative dolphin training expert in the 1960s. He is also the most famous dolphin phonologist. He made flipper, a classic TV show.
Louis pishaws is a semi vegetarian, and he also eats fish. But after shooting this film, he didn't even eat fish and became a vegan. Even the belt and leather clothes were "abandoned" by him.
The Japanese have a long history of hunting and killing dolphins. Dolphin meat has always been an important dish in their diet.
The film was shown at the 2009 Tokyo International Film Festival.
The Japanese government once had a "school lunch plan" in which dolphin meat was listed on the Chinese food menu. But after the film, the dish was cancelled.
Mandy Rae Cruickshank, the Canadian women's freestyle diving champion, and Kirk krack, her husband's freestyle diving coach, took part in the filming.
The director found the person in charge of the model production department of industrial light and magic. With his help, the crew made a fake rock that could hide the camera.
Taimachi has a complex terrain, surrounded by mountains on three sides, with only one entrance. It is also protected by barbed wire, guards and police dogs. The crew can only choose to "climb over the wall" at night.
The entire crew was closely monitored around the clock.
The film was actually shot "illegally" because Japan did not grant permission to shoot it.
Every night when shooting, the whole crew will "arm" themselves like special forces, paint their faces with oil and wear camouflage clothes, and sneak into Taiji to shoot.
The infrared camera without heat source used by the crew at night is a military product. As long as there is a pulse signal, the camera can record it.
The last song of the film is hero written by David Bowie in 1977. The first sentence of the song is I wish you could swim, like the dogs.

Creative background
Since 1960, Rick O'Barry has been a world-famous dolphin trainer. When he became famous, aquariums and dolphin shows all over the world were blooming, he chose to destroy the entertainment industry he built himself. For this reason, he spent 35 years and is still in the process.
After experiencing Casey's "suicide incident", obari took part in the dolphin rescue campaign, demonstrating, practicing and being arrested repeatedly. Until finally, he came to the infamous taijidi of Japan. Here, more than 20000 dolphins are slaughtered every year. In order to reveal the truth, O'Barry found the filmmaker Louis pishaws.
Pishaws, a former photographer for National Geographic, is also very concerned about the environment and wildlife. When he learned what happened in Taiji, he decided to film it all.
shooting process
There is a bay named Taidi in Japan, which has become a world-famous "slaughterhouse" because of the large-scale killing of dolphins by local fishermen. Louis pishos, the director of the documentary "Dolphin Bay", specially aimed at this phenomenon, found Richard obari, the hero behind the scenes who participated in the production of TV and film versions of "Dolphin story", He is also the most authoritative dolphin phonologist in the world, and boldly protested against the killing of dolphins. So I went to Taidi in Japan with obari.
