In 1897, Shanyin squire and reformer Xu Shulan donated 1000 liang of silver, and raised more than 4000 yuan from Shanyin shazu and Shaojun tea office. Imitating Sheng Xuanhuai's creation of Tianjin Zhongxi school, Shaojun Zhongxi school was established under the regulation of second-class school (< I is equivalent to middle school < / I), which was recorded by Zhejiang governor Liao Shoufeng.
In 1898, after the failure of the reform movement of 1898, Cai Yuanpei, who was the editor of the Imperial Academy in the capital, decided that there was no hope for the political improvement of the Qing Dynasty, so he abandoned his official position and returned to Shao, where he was appointed president of Shaojun Chinese and Western school. At the beginning of CAI's career, he planned to set up a library called "yangxincang". He ordered 15 books by hand and taught students in accordance with their aptitude according to their age and the degree of traditional Chinese culture.
In July 1899, the school was renamed Shaoxing Fu school. Cai Yuanpei recruited teachers to promote new education: purchasing scientific instruments, reforming curriculum, compiling textbooks, adding Japanese, gymnastics, surveying and mapping, physical chemistry and other courses, and taking the lead in introducing foreign teachers.
In 1900, Cai Yuanpei resigned because he was dissatisfied with the opposition of the Conservatives and the interference of the school managers, and the school was closed for one year.
In 1901, he Shouzhang became the president of the school, recruiting students to start school again.
