Profile
Ouyang Yuqian (1889-1962), a drama artist and drama educator, was born in Liuyang, Hunan Province. He went to Japan to study in 1904. During that time, he joined the "Chunliu club" and was one of the main actors. He returned to China in 1911. In 1912, together with Lu Jingruo, Ma Jiangshi, Wu wuzun and others, he organized the "new drama comrades' Association" and "Chunliu theater" to advocate the new drama movement, and wrote and performed Beijing opera. In 1919, he began to be the director of "Nantong linggong society" and engaged in drama education. In 1926, he joined Nanguo society and worked as a screenwriter and director in Minxin film company. From 1929 to 1931, he presided over the Guangdong drama Research Institute and engaged in drama creation. During the Anti Japanese War, he was the director of Guangxi Art Museum. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, he served as president of the Central Academy of drama, vice president of the China Federation of literary and art circles and President of the China Dance Association. His works include more than 20 plays, such as his memoir since I acted in the drama, half way monk in the film, collection of essays on Yu Qian's drama, Yide Yuchao, loyal King Li Xiucheng, peach blossom fan and black slave hate.
Mr. Ouyang Yuqian is a writer, director, actor and teacher. He has made a lot of achievements in Beijing opera, drama, film and other art categories. He is a leading figure.
In 1907, when studying in Japan, Ouyang Yuqian joined Chunliu society, the first performing group of early Chinese Drama (New Drama), and served as the main actors of Chunliu society with Zeng Xiaogu, Li Shutong (Master Hongyi) and Lu Jingruo. In the same year, "Chunliu society" performed the drama "black slave calling for heaven" written, directed and performed by the Chinese. With this as a symbol, Chinese drama was born! Ouyang Yuqian also naturally became one of the pioneers of Chinese drama.
Based on Mrs. Stowe's novel Uncle Tom's cabin, this novel reflects the struggle between black slaves and white slave owners, and exposes the evils of black trade and racial oppression in America. There are five acts in the whole play, in which there is a plot of Chinese expatriates in the United States missing their motherland and singing Peking Opera. This shows that the pioneers of Chinese drama explored and tried the nationalization of drama from the beginning, rather than eating it alive. In 1959, Ouyang Yuqian adapted the play "black slave hate" according to the performance of that year.
Ouyang Yuqian is not only one of the pioneers of Chinese drama, but also one of the founders of modern education of Chinese drama. In 1919, he served as the director of "Nantong linggong society" and began his career of drama education. "Nantong linggong society" is the first new school in China to train Peking Opera actors, which is the first of its kind in modern Chinese drama education. After that, Ouyang Yuqian successively presided over the Guangdong drama Research Institute, served as the director of Guangxi Art Museum, and served as the president of the Central Academy of drama for a long time, becoming an outstanding drama educator. During this period, although she did artistic creation and research, and directed a number of plays and films, Ouyang Yuqian, as a dramatic artist, faded out of the stage. What a pity!
Ouyang Yuqian used to be a very popular actor in those years. She was as famous as Mei Lanfang in the Peking Opera circle, and has the saying of "southern Europe and Northern Mei". In 1917, Mei Lanfang performed "Dai Yu burying flowers" in Beijing and Ouyang Yuqian performed "Dai Yu burying flowers" in Shanghai. One south and one north, to perform "burying flowers". Mr. Mei Lanfang said: "people looked at it and thought we were playing." Ouyang Yuqian plays Daiyu with "high makeup and elegant sleeves", which is similar to Mei Lanfang's "Lu" bun and long sleeves. Supporting Mei Lanfang and Ouyang Yuqian, playing Baoyu are Jiang Miaoxiang and Zhou Xinfang, both leading figures in Peking Opera.
In 1919, there was an art summit in Nantong. A plaque is hanging above the living room of "Gengsu theater" in Nantong, which is called "Meiou Pavilion"
There is a couplet on both sides: "the southern faction and the northern faction will be connected, Wanling and Luling are ancient people.". Based on the native places of Mei Yaochen and Ouyang Xiu, two poets in the Northern Song Dynasty, this paper metaphors their artistic achievements, which can be compared with Mei Yaochen, who thinks that "the appearance is difficult to write, such as in the present; the meaning can be found in words" and Ouyang Xiu, who stresses "smooth reasoning and euphemism".
