In the best hours of the hundred million grasshoppers, Xu Binjie still used them to make ship models. When the light is dim, he will light up the lamp and continue to work. For an 82 year old, this is not easy. For half a century, he has been obsessed with the production and collection of ship models, which almost exhausted the best time of most of his life. Because of years of meticulous work, the joints of the head fingers have been deformed and swollen. Enter the ship model Museum of Xu Binjie located in xinshinan Road, Hongkou District, Shanghai, where Xu Binjie and his wife's dream and collection about Chinese ancient ships for nearly half a century are collected. Unfortunately, it's almost closed to the outside world.
Dream of recovery
In 1998, Mr. Xu founded the first individual ship model Museum in Shanghai. At that time, the ship model museum was built in the humble Shikumen old house. More than 100 ancient sailing models of China's four major schools made by him are very rare. At that time, the conditions were limited. Only some ship models were displayed with glass frames, while others could only be stored in boxes or small attics. When someone came to visit, Mr. Xu climbed up and down and took the "baby" out in turn for people to enjoy.
Mr. Xu's ship model collection has been nearly half a century. Different from most of the folk collections, almost all of his ship models are made by himself. Over the years, his biggest dream is to make the four ancient Chinese ship lines "Sha, Fu, Guang and Niao" reappear in his head. There are no ready-made samples for reference, so we should start with the investigation and collection of the data of ancient Chinese sailboats. There was once an American scholar who spent 30 years in the period of the Republic of China to go back to the two sides of the Yangtze River to investigate Chinese wooden boats. After returning to the United States, he published a book "sailing boats and sampans of the Yangtze River". Xu Binjie was shocked by the fact that he wanted to go to the United States to look up the history of the Chinese people. He was determined to restore China's ancient boat world bit by bit.
As a hundred million slug boat, it can be as little as a few months, as much as nearly a year. Over the past few decades, Xu Binjie devoted himself to the production of more than 200 ship models. Talking about the thousands of years of shipbuilding history of Shanfen in China, the old man was very excited. As early as in the book of changes, it was recorded that "Fuxi's Zhao wood was a boat, and each wood was a boat". However, with the progress of society and the development of science and technology, wooden sailboats are increasingly scarce. The famous ancient sailboats and shipbuilding in ancient China are almost extinct.
"Thousands of sails" beside the sunken boat
Collecting ship models should start from Xu Binjie's work.
In 1946, Xu Binjie entered the Shanghai Ferry Company and worked with ships on the Huangpu River day and night. Yan Wenliang, a former painter, designed tickets for the ferry company and painted posters. For a time, he became a little famous artist, so he was dug into the newly established ship model team by the company. The frigate he made for the first time in a few months sank to the bottom of the water and became a "submarine" when he took part in the ship model competition of the Shanghai games for the first time. Therefore, the ship was derided as a "Royal ship". At that time, he was young and unconvinced. Determined to study ship model technology, to make a first-class ship model.
Since then, Xu Binjie's life and ship model. Throw away the paintbrush, give up dancing, concentrate on how to "shipbuilding". Either squat beside the blacksmith at the gate of the lane to learn how to do metal processing, or learn needlework from his wife. Taking advantage of his work, he often shuttles on the Huangpu River in the company's transport boats to observe all kinds of boats. Since then, the ship model he made has not only won the Shanghai champion, but also won the national flight model championship. Of course, his goal is far more than that. Dealing with ships for a long time makes him notice that Chinese ancient famous ships are only described in words, and the drawings and entities have been submerged in history.
The production of ship model is full of hardships. There is no ready-made experience to follow. The ship models made by Xu Binjie are restored in strict accordance with the drawings at a fixed ratio of 1:25. Xu Binjie regards the ship model he made as a three-dimensional drawing. If there are no drawings and words of Yi grasshopper, he hopes that his restored ship model can tell future generations what the ancient Chinese ships look like.
Today, not all the ship models in his "baigexuan" collection are available. His "Zheng Chenggong warship" has been collected by the Chinese Military Museum, and his "seven fans" has been collected by the Guinness Museum of Shanghai. His works can be found in Shanghai Hall of the Great Hall of the people in Beijing and Quanzhou in Fujian. The hundred million slug "big catch ancient sailing boat" he is working on is made for the Shanghai World Expo and will be permanently displayed in the hall of the shipping hall. He held the yacht with his slightly trembling heads and carefully combed every detail in the sun. He still tried to do his best and insisted on completing the boat. "This kind of boat used to be popular on the Huangpu River, and its nickname was green eyebrow..."
