Brief introduction

Zhuang Suoyuan newspaper cutting collection was established in March 1992. The owner of the museum had a affinity with newspapers all his life. He was very ambitious in his old age and had 350000 newspaper clippings in his collection.

It contains the first issue of science pictorial, the first popular science newspaper in China, a complete set of 1-18 volumes and most of the 60 years' materials so far, as well as historical materials of various popular science newspapers before and after liberation.

He has made remarkable achievements in collecting newspapers for more than 60 years, so he was included in the dictionary of Chinese collectors and celebrities.

Character experience

Mr. Zhuang Suoyuan, 85 years old, was a chemistry teacher of Shidong middle school in Shanghai. He has been engaged in science and technology education for a long time since 1950s. After retiring in 1979, he was employed by Shanghai Association for science and technology to set up "do it yourself" as the first editor in chief. So far, 500 issues have been published. On March 15, 1992, he set up a newspaper cutting Library in his apartment in Hongkou District. In October 1997, he moved to Taihe new town, Baoshan District. His newspaper cutting library has been open to the public for 17 years.

Zhuang Suoyuan had a strong interest in science and technology since he was a child, and he liked to get to the bottom of the matter. His name "Suoyuan" means "up and down". In his home, Mr. Zhuang has collected the first issue of science pictorial published in 1933. On the cover of the large format printed with five colors, a man and a woman are facing the rising sun in the East, which indicates the future of China's science and technology. At that time, he was only nine years old, and the science pictorial became the most precious collection in his heart.

In 2003, science pictorial celebrated its 70th anniversary. Before that, it published a notice of "looking for outstanding collectors of science pictorial". Zhuang Suoyuan wrote an article to apply for the job, and introduced the complete set of volumes 1 to 20 collected over the years, as well as various versions published later (including "wartime special issue", renamed "science popularization" and other treasures in the late Cultural Revolution), totaling more than 650 copies, which is as high as one person. In the same year, Zhuang Suoyuan won the first prize in the list of outstanding collectors.

On May 28, 1981, the first issue of the trial issue of "materials of scientific and technological activities one by one" edited by Zhuang Suoyuan was born in the "science hall" of Nanchang Road, where Shanghai Association for science and technology is located. Here are displayed the first issue of that year, the bound edition of 81, 82 and 83, the complete set of condensed bound edition of 1984-2002, 300 issues of special issues, memorabilia, 500 issues of special edition and Zhuang Suoyuan's article "seeking truth and being pragmatic, always doing new". There are also two issues of English newspapers (for international exchange) compiled by him for the Municipal Association of science and technology, a special page of "grab king to sail one by one", and review records over the years.

All his life, Zhuang Suoyuan was associated with newspapers, collecting, cutting, using and running newspapers. Just as others call him, "like a porter, his footprints are everywhere.".
