Crane Garden
Minghe garden is located in the north of the west gate of Peking University. This is the site of Minghe garden, which was once known as one of the five major residence gardens in the west of Beijing. Minghe garden and Jingchun garden, another ancient garden in Peking University, originally belong to Chunxi garden, which is one of the affiliated gardens of Yuanmingyuan. During the reign of Emperor Qianlong, He Lin, a former favorite minister, was granted as a garden and became a part of Shuchun garden. Later, in the seventh year of Jiaqing, Shuchun garden was divided into two parts. The smaller garden in the East was awarded to Princess Zhuang Jing, the fourth daughter of Jiaqing, named "Jingchun garden"; the larger garden in the West was awarded to Prince Hui Mianyu, the fifth son of Jiaqing, known as Minghe garden, commonly known as laowuye garden. Mianyu, the owner of the garden, was an important figure in the political situation of the late Qing Dynasty. He was relied on by the emperors Daoguang and Xianfeng. Together with Zeng gelinqin, he once suppressed the northern expedition of Tianping kingdom.
The origin of Minghe garden is related to the "Yuanming five gardens" in Beijing during the Qing Dynasty: Yuanming garden, Changchun Garden, Qichun garden, Xichun garden and Shuchun Garden (Chunxi courtyard). The five gardens belong to three different places
Yuanmingyuan, Changchun Garden and Qichun garden belong to Yuanmingyuan.
Xichun garden belongs to Tsinghua University and is divided into two parts: Jinchun garden and Qinghua garden.
Shuchun garden belongs to Peking University, including Minghe garden, Jingchun garden, Langrun garden and Weiming lake.
Therefore, Minghe garden is a small part of the original Yuanmingyuan, which was burned down by the British and French allied forces together with Yuanmingyuan. The rest of the place is occupied by some buildings of Peking University, which is incomplete.
The crane garden we see today is a small lake connecting the north and the south.
