Beijing Botanical Garden, Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences
Beijing Botanical Garden, Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is a designated tourism unit of Beijing and Haidian District Tourism Administration.
Introduction to botanical garden
The Beijing Botanical Garden of the Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was established in 1955 with the approval of the Central People's Government under the initiative of academician Yu Dejun and other older botanists. It is also one of the earliest botanical gardens established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the 1950s after the founding of new China. Beijing Botanical Garden is located in the capital of China. It is supported by the Institute of Botany, which has a long history and strong scientific research force. It has always been a window and gateway for China and the Academy of Sciences in botany and botanical garden to display achievements and academic exchanges. There are also a group of outstanding scientists who play an important role in ex situ conservation and resource development research and international cooperation. The botanical garden has a planning area of 119 hectares and an existing land area of 74 hectares, including 20.7 hectares of exhibition area, 17.2 hectares of experimental site, 1820 square meters of exhibition greenhouse and 3000 square meters of experimental greenhouse. More than 10 exhibition areas and rooms have been built, including arboretum, perennial flower garden, rose garden, peony garden, herbal garden, crape myrtle garden, wild fruit tree resource area, environmental protection plant area, aquatic plant area, rare and endangered plant area, tropical and subtropical plant exhibition greenhouse, etc. There are nearly 5000 species (including varieties) of cultivated plants, including about 2000 species of trees and shrubs, more than 1000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, nearly 500 species (including varieties) of flowers, and more than 1500 species of fruit trees, aromatic plants, oil plants, Chinese herbal medicines, aquatic plants, etc. More than 75000 seed specimens and 22500 species were collected in the seed Herbarium, ranking the first in Asia and the third in the world. It has plant seed exchange relations with more than 300 units in more than 60 countries (or regions).
It has also achieved good results in science popularization. It receives about 200000 tourists every year. It is a designated internship or learning unit of some professional colleges and primary and secondary schools in Beijing and other places. It has been awarded the titles of "National Youth Science and technology education base", "Beijing Science Popularization Education Base" and "Haidian Science Popularization Education Base" in the first batch. It is also a designated tourism base of Beijing and Haidian Tourism Bureau Company.
Beijing Botanical Garden focuses on the introduction and cultivation of rare and endangered plants and plants with important economic value. It focuses on the ex situ protection of wild plants in the north, explores the resources of wild plants, summarizes the theories and methods of plant introduction and domestication, and uses the methods of plant ecology and landscape aesthetics to configure and display plants, so as to make them become the ex situ protection and sustainable utilization of plant diversity in the north It is the base of scientific research and popular science education.
Beijing Botanical Garden mainly studies: ex situ conservation of wild plants in northern China; introduction, conservation and rescue strategies of rare and endangered plants; long-term conservation and utilization of seed biology and germplasm resources; introduction and utilization of important economic plant resources and cultivation of new varieties. On the other hand, based on the strong scientific research foundation of the Institute of Botany, Beijing Botanical Garden, combined with plant collection and specialty garden construction, serves for the in-depth study of plant system and evolution, classification and reproduction, ecology and other disciplines of the Institute of Botany.
In the knowledge innovation project of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Botanical Garden is regarded as the "network construction of botanical garden of Chinese Academy of Sciences" As the core botanical garden in the middle temperate zone, we will strive to improve the ability of knowledge innovation and knowledge dissemination of Beijing Botanical Garden as a national strategic resource reserve, build one of the research centers for ex situ conservation and sustainable utilization of plant germplasm resources in China and a national popular science education base, and lay the foundation for building a world-class "classic" botanical garden.
