Former residence of Zhang Bishi
Zhang Bishi's footprints are all over Southeast Asia and China. It's hard to count the number of luxury houses he lived in. However, after nearly a hundred years of ups and downs and war, few of them have survived completely. In Southeast Asia, the most complete former residence of Zhang Bishi should be the "Blue House" in Penang. In Penang, if you ask people: how to get to the former residence of Zhang Bishi? I'm afraid few people can say that. If you say "Blue House", no one doesn't know. The blue house is located in the poetic old street: Leith street. Maybe a hundred years ago, there was a lotus and a river, but now there is no lotus and no river, but there is an elegant name. Lotus River, blue house and more than ten Victorian century old houses are woven into a colonial landscape.
On July 17, 2002, Zhang Bishi's former residence was announced by the people's Government of Guangdong Province as the fourth batch of cultural relics protection units of Guangdong Province (serial number 93).
Profile
Zhang Bishi (1841-1916) was born in Dapu County, Meizhou City, Guangdong Province in 1841. At the age of 16, he crossed the sea to Jakarta, Indonesia (formerly known as Batavia, Dutch East India). He once worked as a helper, opened a business and mined tin. He became the richest man among the overseas Chinese at that time. From then on, he was also a businessman and an official and embarked on an official career. He was Consul General of the Qing government in Penang and Consul General of Singapore. In order to revitalize the motherland's industry, he has invested in the establishment of Guangdong Han railway, Guangsan railway, etc., and founded Shandong Yantai Changyu liquor company. In 1898, he raised funds to set up two ocean shipping companies in Bacheng and Aceh.
Former residence of Zhang Bishi
Zhang Bishi's former residence is not only the largest existing Qing Dynasty Chinese garden style mansion in Malaysia, but also the second one in Southeast Asia (Chen Xunian's former residence in Singapore is much smaller). The following figures about the blue house may be a bit boring, but they are not meaningless. The blue house was started in 1897 and took seven years to complete. At the beginning of the project, Zhang Bishi was the Consul General of the Qing government in Singapore, and also had jurisdiction over the affairs of Penang, Malacca and the nearby British colonies. As a result, he often travels between Singapore and Penang. After the completion of the blue house, he was promoted to minister of business investigation. Emperor Guangxu once received him and awarded him the title of Zhengqing of Taipusi (ranking second grade). At that time, there were nine grades in the official rank of Manqing, and the first grade was the highest. Among the rich businessmen in Nanyang who were awarded the title by the Qing government, Zhang Bishi was the most important. According to the female commentator of blue house, Zhang Bishi has a high talent in learning languages. Besides the various Chinese dialects in Nanyang, he can also speak English, Dutch and Malay. In his later years, he often wore foreign clothes and occasionally ate Western food. Although the appearance of the blue house is very Chinese, the interior furnishings are a mixture of Chinese and foreign furnishings, reflecting the combination of Chinese and western. Zhang Bishi's relatives planned to sell the blue house in 1991, which was bought by four local rich people. In 1995, the new owner carried out a comprehensive renovation. After the completion of the project, the 100 year old house will become an extraordinary exhibition hall and open to the public.
