Development of school history

In 1984, the Northern University for nationalities was founded, formerly known as the northwest second college for nationalities.

In 2000, it passed the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of the Ministry of education.

On December 20, 2002, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the State Commission for Nationalities signed an agreement on the co construction of six institutions affiliated to the State Commission for nationalities, namely, the Central University for nationalities, Central South University for nationalities, Northwest University for nationalities, Southwest University for nationalities, northwest Second University for Nationalities and Dalian University for nationalities.

In 2004, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the government of Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region signed a joint construction agreement.

In February 2006, the Ministry of Education approved the preparation of the Northern University for Nationalities on the basis of the former northwest Second University for nationalities, with a period of two years;

In 2007, it successfully passed the undergraduate teaching evaluation of the Ministry of education and obtained the "excellent" grade;

In 2008, the University was officially renamed as Northern University for Nationalities by the Ministry of education

In May 2011, it was rated as "National Graduate Employment typical experience university" by the Ministry of education.

In 2012, the first batch of students were selected into the national innovation and entrepreneurship training program.

In September 2014, on the 30th anniversary of Northern University for nationalities, the University opened a special network for the celebration.

In October 2015, the State Ethnic Affairs Commission and the Ministry of Education decided to jointly build the Northern University for nationalities.

In 2017, it was selected as one of the first batch of innovation and entrepreneurship education reform demonstration universities in China.

In March 2018, it was selected into the first batch of "new engineering" research and practice projects of the Ministry of education. In May, the 34th meeting of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council approved the list of doctoral and master's degree awarding units and new degree awarding points added in 2017, and Northern University for nationalities was added as a doctoral degree awarding unit.

On February 11, 2019, a new doctoral program in ethnology was added in Northern University for nationalities. Before that, the University was granted four first-class master programs in ecology, electronic science and technology, chemical engineering and technology, and applied economics, and six master programs in arts, accounting, applied statistics, international business, finance, and law.
